GOALKEEPERS:
Vincent Enyeama, Bamidele Aiyenugba, Austin Ejide
DEFENDERS:
Joseph Yobo, Danny Shittu, Obinna Nwaneri, Taye Taiwo, Elderson Echiejile, Yusuf Mohammed, Chidi Odiah, Onyekachi Apam
MIDFIELDERS:
Nwankwo Kanu, Mikel Obi, Dickson Etuhu, Sani Kaita, Yusuf Ayila, Oluwaseyi Olofinjana, Kalu Uche
STRIKERS:
Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Osaze Odemwingie, Michael Eneramo, Obinna Nsofor, Obafemi Martins, Chinedu Obasi
Dis list is not new 2 many Nigerians…We should jst hope 4 d best…
Where is Nsofor the most pacy player we ve got. This is unfair cos this guy did a lot to qualify us. At the moment , this guy is better than the Emenaro and Yakubu. Well someone just has to represent us
My only problem is the defence. No adeleye. Amodu self!!!!!!!!! For the midfield, since rabiu did not make the provisional list, it is not surprising the players that are there. I just wish them good luck. Let us pray this our mourinho 4-3-3 CAN BRING BACK THE TROPHY. E NO GO EASY OOO
I agrre with you Kingsley on Adeleye Amodu did not have that courage and gut to drop Yobo who had not totally recovered from injury, even without injury Yobo is not all reliable in the central defence he should rarher be moved to rthe ight back and as for Obafemi i think he should have been exluded from the list since he is yet to fully recover. Amodu should have included Lukman or rabiu Ibrahim in the midfield……any way i wish them them the best.
nice comments y’all. all Amodu nids is our support. i have d feeling we’ll do well in Agola
EVERY NIGERIANS! PLEASE LOOK AT THE PLAYERS YOUR COACH DROPPED:
Dele Adeleye, Adefemi Olubayo, midfielder, Femi Ajilore, Joseph Akpala, Chibuzor Okonkwo, Greg Etafia, Akpan Bassey and Ikechukwu Ibenegbu.
THOUGH WE WILL ALWAYS WISH THEM WELL, BUT AMODU HAS JUST SIGNED HIS SACK LETTER BY SUCUMBING TO THE MONEYBAGS AND MEANT-NO-WELL BUSINESSMEN WE CALL NFF(NO FUTURE FOREVER).
WHY DON’T WE HAVE GUTS AS NIGERIANS, REASON WE REMAIN AN ILLUSION IN ALL FIELDS INT’LY. HE IS ONLY ENVIOUS OF SIASIA….
Just one bad game from DELE ADELEYE and ADEFEMI OLUBAYO against Tunisia and they suddenly become bad players in the thinking of AMODU. I think he has made a mistake there.
I dont even agree that Adeleye had a bad game against Tunisia. The entire team, including the coach should be blamed for the fiasco. The young man was give far too much to do in that match and wobbled. If Amodu is crucifying Adeleye what will he do to Taye Taiwo who allowed the equaliser or Mikel Obi who lost the ball for the first goal. Let me warn Nigerians not to put their hope in this EAGLES. They will fumble with their coach in Angola
Lagos and Delta states alone can present a team that can win the nations/world cup. The problem is maladministration in maladjusted NFF. Where are the local pro? Let there be a match between the best of our foreign pro in team A and that of local pro in team B. Then let Amodu select the best to represent the country.
There is no point debating this list…Amodu is too dense and incompetent a coach to win anything this year. We need to start debating who will take over after the team crashes out of the ANC.
Just for clarification, I am not in any way praying for the Eagles to fail BUT the Mumudu has forced that hand with his selection of mediocre players like Nwanneri, Kalu Uche, Yussuf Mohammed, Sani Kaita and yes, Kanu who is nothing but deadwood. He is clearly the architect of his impending misfortune.
Also, this is what Nigeria gets for picking a coach who came in 4th in the evaluations behind Siasia, Keshi and Oliseh.
well,it is hard to say why he made these list but in my own view, ifeel he should have given adeleye a second chance.he is still a learner(adeleye) but he played a big part towards our qualification.now, when it comes to the midfield,am not too crazy about olofingana,he seems lost most times in the game.his contribution leaves much to be desired.
i have not been impressed by eneramo of much.again, ayegbeni on the other hand is very unstablbe, jittery and quick to lose form.i dont see why ogbuke should be put on waiting list,he can be a top class performer on his best day.i like obagol but he has become a lousy player of late.thats my take on this selection so far !
happy new year my people!
u all should for once think positive concerning things of this beloved country (NIGERIA) our Father Land. why not have faith in the players Amodu has selected for the ANC.
Its not about having faith in Nigeria players..all Nigerian fans have had faith in the players since day one. The issue is the incompetence of the coaching crew.
Let’s say you were on a ship and the captain was steering a course to hit rocks. Everyone can clearly see that is the case but the captain says that nothing will happen, will you still have faith in him?
It is painfully obvious this sorry excuse of a coaching crew are grossly incompetent. Nigeria is one a path for a disastrous outing, no thanks to Mumudu.
I sincerely take exception when ppl insult and call Kanu names. for heaven sake lets show some respect to this legend.it is absord for someone who has done nothing to develop Nigeria to call a legend like Kanu on and off the pitch a deadwood. That is disrespectful.Kanu still and is the best player among the present Nigerian players, just like Okocha. They are simply irreplaceable.I believe in any Nigerian player. That is my take. That mikel can start a match in chelsea with star studded team like that makes him exceptional. After holland, we all join the world in praising him.had Nigeria won that tournament, he would have come on top than messi. He position only changed at chelsea, and he is still a big player and very important to chelsea line up.Ballack and deco are sitting on the bench for him to play. The biggest worry and i wont be scared to say it is the coach. If i hv siasa there, i will believe in the game until its over. to me he is like Mourinho.Amodu is not a coach and i can say it in his face.He is nothing but a confusionist.he lacks every technical knowledge of the game.Much as i am praying that we win the ANC so that this players can have the medals and Kanu can retire with it, winning it will not happen bcos Amodu is good.It will just be like the game against Kenya were the players showed quality and intensity.HAPPY NEW NIEGRAINS
actually no one is doubting amodu’s technical ability, we all have the feeling that he will deliver in angola. But when it comes to selection of players amodu finds himself in dilemma, can someone tell me the reason why kanu is going to ANC,the is someone that is veteran and his experience are needed on the sideline. Why cant we use kanu slot to put in another young player that is in good form.
The coach is an insult to courage. Why can’t he drop yobo. Common sense tell me yobo has pass it. Adeleye is World class, he has good ball control and he is confident on the ball, he has good recovery speed. The NFF should be blame if we fail in Angola. They can’t keep a coach who qualified for the WC on luck.
If Kanu respected himself, he would have retired gracefully and with all the fanfare years ago.
Right now, he is deadwood taking up space for someone younger and more productive. He is one of the reasons the Eagles play lethargic football.
He has no business being on the team as he offers nothing. All that talk about being a motivator on and off the pitch is nonsense.
Amodu, like the wimp he is, simply doesn’t have the guts to dump him.
why is obafemi on this list he is injured and unfit, i prefer akpala whe will this amodu learn?
I think all we need now is prayer, Let’s thank God that we’re going for the nations cup ‘cos it will determine what will happen in South Africa. But I think those young guys are better than the old ones, He should have included Dele Adeleye & Obinna Nsofor, These guyz are strong. Anyway Good Luck.
The only question I have about your Amodu’s selection is the inclusion of Kanu in your team. No doubt about Kanu’s skill but he’s legs are beginning to fail him. He’s not fit for modern day soccer as he has reached his maximum physical strength. He barely plays for 15 minutes for his current club in England. A young player should have replaced him even if the young player is just on the bench to understudy the players and build up experience that the Eagles can tap on for future engagements. With all respect for Kanu, his inclusion is a waste and will have no benefit to the team.

Chocolate brother, pls kindly retract these ur unwarranted and uncalculated negative assessment of Kanu in that final list. He very much deserve his place in that team. Common reasoning will tell u that in sound team, the coach should a good mix of young, energetic players as well experienced ones. Jay Jay retired impromtuly from National team because of critics like u while Maldini (Italy), Rigoberth Song(Cameroun) etc played on for their respective country. Check the replay of the world cup qualifying match btw our dear Eagles and Kenya, U’ll see the invaluable contribution of King Kanu( ur deadwood). If u are a good football analyst, u should be able to know that ‘money doesn’t buy good experience’ and Kanu has most times shown in both club and country to be an important substitute that can turn the result of a game to the advantage of his team. His seemingly lethargic display is one of his unique tricks which most often has proven to be an asset to his team before the end of any game he plays. Each good player has a unique talent that helps the team. Kanu, without sentiment, has and is still proving that he is Africa golden boy in the field of soccer. Kindly respect and adore him for that, as we thank God for commited player like Kanu Nwankwo. Amodu has been given a Semi-final target in this nation cup; its ok, and if he meets the target, let him take us to the world cup. If the reverse is the case, let NFF employ a sound technical adviser to take us to world cup or even employ the mozambique’s foreign technical adviser for the world cup mission with Amodu as part of the coaching crew to the world cup. This is fair enough on the part of Amodu and on the part of football-loving Nigerians. Happy new year to you all.
Nadico,
I can understand your worship of Kanu but the man is highly irrelevant to the present day needs of the Super Eagles. He is spent – he has nothing to offer. Youtalk about experience? Please, don’t make me laugh. You talk about the Kenya game? What the heck did he do, besides stand and joke at the side line?? Please, stop trying to reach where there is nothing.
Where was Zizzou’s experience when he headbutted Materrazzi in the 2006WC finals? You talk about Maldini? He wasn’t even on the Italian squad and was displaced by the brilliant Fabio Grosso.
Its people like yourself that don’t want the Eagles to progress, with your insistence on hanging onto the past. Kanu has no business being on this squad. None, whatsoever. In a time of physical, pacey and demanding football when coaches are looking for quick, multi-dimensional players, it is downright foolish of any coach to include a player on his squad that can only give you 15 minutes of play. Even with Kanu’s 15 minutes, he ends up walking around the field. The guy is finished and it is silly to think he still deserves a spot on the team, at the expense of someone who can give you 90 minutes of high octane football.
Kanu is a luxury that the present Nigerian team cannot afford to have. We need high performing workers on the field who are fast and physical in order to keep up with the likes of Ghana, Egypt, Ivory Coast and Cameroon, to name a few. Even the so called minnows will give us a run for our money. Kanu is certainly not the answer and has nothing tangible to contribute. The man is deadwood and should be discarded from the team. He ought to do the honorably thing and retire. But he selfishly refuses to do so and hang on.
Coach Shuaibu Amodu has shown clearly that he is not in charge of this team with the inclusion of Yusuf Mohammed, whom many consider as a third rated player.
What of an Injured Yobo, and an Nwaneri and Olofinjanor who all criticize to have gone beyond thier prime, showing signs of actual weakness.
Nigerians believe Dele Adeleye, Olubayo, two real Olympic trojans should have made the team to Angola.
Aside these, the selection is not too different from what we expected. Amodu must show courage to take decisions that would be in the overall interest of Nigerians and not to please his masters alone.
We wish him luck and hopes he wins the Cup. This outing, everybody knows could be his last for Nigeria should he wobble.
Coach give it all you have got. Goodluck!
with due respect to amodu and co, super eagles is not a family business like the the goverment we have. the only good thing we are knowing of all over the world is this football, pls let that their politics end up in aso rock ( aso corruption). mumudu is not the right man there, he is a virus in a team like super eagles. in any case let the mercy of God be upon them. happy new year to you all.
WE ARE TALKING ABOUT DEFENDERS.PLEASE WHERE IS ADELEYE,THE ONLY MAN MESI CAN AFRAID.WELL YOUR MFIELDERS AND YOUR STRIKERS ARE OKAY .COACHIN PLEASE DONT DO MONEY SELECTION
IF NOT THAT KANU IS A CAPT ,I WILL PREFER KANU TO STEPDOWN.WE NEED STRONG MEN ON THE PITCH
ehat to my fantastic play maker..ik uche
we nigeria complain 2much. i believe amodu selected the best as moment. let give him a chance and stop blowing hot and cold
Pls,pray heavly 4 our darling super eagles to win the cup of nation for the third time.I am refering this information to those that showed no confidence atitude to Coach Amadou (the only indigenous coach that qualified Nigeria to world cup up to two times). With that ur prayers,i bet u we will prosper and sky is the limit of the African Greatest Team.
That was a good selection, although we miss two players, Ikechukwu Uche who i understand is injured, & John Chukwudi Utaka that is not doing so well 4 now. But all the same, d squad is OK and will try in d competition.
This issues are just controversial and somehow. we are all acting like chameleons. kanu is old, kanu is wasted, kanu is tired, kanu is this, kanu is dat. dat was the same thing said about Jay Jay Master Okocha, and we went ahead to make do with the rising star Mikel in 2006 nations cup,and we all know what happend.we now brought him late on in the match against ivory coast.Instantly, we saw stability and control in the midfield.Fans that had understanding, regretted. And now, is it Kanu’s turn to be crucified? The few times i saw him play in the qualifiers, he was splendid, particularly a match where he didn’t lose a ball in his possession and he did create chances and threat. That is the experience we need in the Super Eagles. There is nothing wrong with even Okocha being a back up to this present Super Eagles to pass his experience to the younger ones and also to come in once in a while to do his thing. What can we say of Beckham of England, Totti and Del Piero of Italy,Ronaldo of Brazil in 2006,etc,Arsenal should serve as a lesson to us all(with due respect to Arsenal Fans)Balancing experience with rising stars is crucial and vital, and should thus, not be taking for granted. As 4 Amodu even if he succeeds in Angola and even the World Cup,it would be ‘mainly’ due to the zeal, determination, will to make it and excel,by the young players. His will just be the coordinating factor which even me or any football elite can do.Let’s wait and see if my points are sensible after the Nations Cup,that is,concerning Kanu and Amodu….
DROPPING ADELEYE WAS NOT TOO FAIR AFTER PLAYING VERY WELL IN D QUALIFIERS I PRAY HE MAKES IT TO THE WORLD CUP
To all the commentators, I throway salute oo & wish u all happy new year and also pray that may the merciful Almighty God make this year a blissful, peaceful, productive, fruitful & significant one in the history of Nigeria & the world at large.
I would like to be very brief with comment & at the same time touch almost all the important parts of both people’s pleasures & displeasures & may God guide me in doing that.
I would start by saying thank you!!! to all Nigerians for the invaluable support u av all displayed towards the success of the Nigerian’s national team. U will all agree with me without doubt that last year has been a challenging and remarkable year for Nigerian football, footballers and the coaching crew. However it will amount to injustice, if i didnot leave a comment about the current issue, as regards the selected list of players. So far i seem contempted with the list of players selected except for the exclusion of ‘Dele Adeleye’ which i feel will not av been an easy decision to make by the coaching crew and could also lead to lack of interest in future young talented charm like him. But to Dele i will say ” your time will surely come; a befitting time indeed.”. To u my fellow sports fans i want to say thanks for ur immense creative and constructive criticism, however we should not allow d issue of non inclusion of one or two players disunite us in our quest for both the nation’s & world cups victory. I will urge us to continue being supportive, encouraging and most of all constructively criticising in dealing with issues concerning the Eagles as we usher in the new year. And please let’s go all out to give our brothers our much needed support in Angola and beyond , and may the God of all nations assist us & see us thru in these tournaments. Aamiin.
Apam is not supposed to be i n that team at all na real jb him no sabi play very doll player. he should have use that position to compencent Dele beside nwaneri can also play the same position like Apam, nigeria na wa oooooh
We need the final 23 not 24 anyway he will still remove one player which is onyekachi Apam
AModu self…where is Adeleye…may God help you…hope Amodu is not collecting money from this boys? This are questions to answer.
my dear Babangida, it is not about prayers but about NFF they are the major problem naija have, the bible says that he who knows what is good and fails to do it, it is a sin unto him. there are a lot of virus in our football house, nigeria teams have for long time lived on our prayers b/c we naija we love football but for how long shall we be praying for people who don´t want to repent?, this is a waste of energy and anointing, neverthless naija has been living on prayers so lets continue praying.
this is time for amodu to be sack after nations cup.bcz nigeria need good coach like siasia amodu and nfa there basterd peaple
this is not good team from amodu.this team can reach second raound.this team is like team will send to ghana 2008
Its unfortunate that Nigeria never learn from past experiences. The present crop of players to the nation cup 2010 cannot win us the cup partly because most of the players are bench warmers and done have first team shirts in their club sides, and their fitness is questionable. Indeed, corruption is reflecting in every sphere of our lives including team selection. The only way forward is to change and do things the right.

Facing egypt doz nt scare me as mozambiq, the secret of qualifyn 4rm d group is beating egypt in da first match
Most of your comments are fear motivated and wrong. This selection that Amodu has made will be difficult to overcome by any African Team featuring in AFCON. Think of it carefully, the defence will not concede easily, the attack is good and pacy, the mid field is third placed, but what other African Nation can provide a better one? This is a better selection than Berti Voght’s and I am willing to bet the Eagles are for the Cup. Adeleye is much slower than Nwaneri, he is also deficient in strength, firm tackles, blocks and speed of falling backwards as well as aerially. The selection is OK.
You guys are gitering more than the players and full of negetivity. The same way no one trusted the under 17 before the tournament that is the same thing that started happening now. The coach has been with the players and has dropped who he feels he should drop yet you guys are here troubling your self. African team are full of quality, but inspite of that it is still one team that will lift the trophy. So lets watch and see what happen rather than engage in arguement and criticism that will not lead us any where. I just wish the eagles good luck. I believe the God of succer will go with them as it was with the under 17 even when Nigerian do not believe in them.
chocolate brother should be more diplomatic and not refer to kanu as a dead wood. Was kanu featured in last two lethargic games the Eagles played?how then can you say he is responsible for Eagles lethargic play?Have you forgotten that if not for Kanu we would not have beaten kenyan in the first leg,coz he set up the penalty and contributed to the second goal of the match. It will interest you to know that Zidane came from retirement and qualified France for 2006 world cup and led them to the final.Like it or hate it;KANU at his old age is still one of our best and the younger ones still need him around to learn a few things.
It is unfortunate the way we use our mouths to retire our experienced stars. Kanu is still a god of soccer wether we like it or not and his trickery and experience is still relevant to this team. After we did the same to Okocha, we now hardly have a creative player who can carve openings and spaces to exploit the opposing team weaknesses. Football is never only about strong or pacy players but also technicalities, intelligence and trickery which kanu is a master of. He has never been a strong or pacy player but he sheilds the ball well, carve out openings (including freekicks and penalties) and his silky skills are still a delight to watch. Lets be realistic with ourselves, there is no player in the eagles now that can do what Kanu does for the team. Lets stop this attitude of forcing our experienced stars to premature retirement!
Happy New Year to you all. Nigerians believe Dele Adeleye, Olubayo, two real Olympic heroes should have made the team to Angola considering their roles in the qualifiers and control on the ball. GOOD LUCK TO THE TEAM.
We all know there are SACRED COWS IN THE TEAM for a coach like Amodu.
You two guys should stop living in the past and wake up to the future. Granted, Kanu served his country well and gave us memorable times, with the Olympic team, at Ajax under van Gaal, and at Arsenal. Those were where he really shone. Since leaving Arsenal, his football has slowly depreciated and at this point in time, he has nothing tangible to offer.
Football has transgressed from flash in the pan performances (like you referenced in your arguement) to consistent performances, for both club and country, neither of which Kanu has been able to put up in recent years. He had a decent few minutes against Kenya – but Nsofor had that and a whole lot more. Besides, Nigeria was leading Kenya 1-0 and I would suggest the result would still have been a win for Nigeria if Kanu didn’t play. So, for all intents and purposes, he really did not change the final outcome (final being a victory for Nigeria against the Kenyans in Abuja). That was perhaps one of the few games he featured in during this campaign, further pointing to his irrelevance in the overall scheme of things.
You boys need to wake up and shine your eyes – Kanu is no longer relevant to the Eagles and the sooner you realize that, the sooner Nigerian football can move forward. Now, the whole team plays like Kanu – slow, sluggish and predictable. We need a different direction to move forward – pace, a lot of running on and off the ball and quick interchange of passes. That’s how the modern game is played, something Kanu is incapable of doing.
He needs to be given his golden wrist watch and dismissed from the Eagles cos he is deadwood.
haha this funny. i’ll tell you who isnt winning the african nations cup, and oh yes its nigeria. its too late already and please they better not sack amodu if he messes up at the nations cup cause it would be too late then. they refused to listen to us after we qualified for the world cup. wish them the best but too bad our best wishes will not win the trophy. looking forward to another crappy nations cup, probably a bronze or quater final exit.
where is anichebe, ameobi and onuoha? this would have have been a chance to introduce them into the squad to ready for the world cup.
chocolate brother excuse me to say that you are such a fool with your argument about king kanu.its people like you who dont watch football matces will just open thier mouth and talk rubbish.im a portsmouth supporter and i watch all their matches so let me know tell u that kanu is stil very vital to portsmouth if fools like dont value him.more recently kanu has played 90 mins of football against stoke and since the new manager took over kanu has featured more than utaka and has started some matches and even came out from the bench to win man of the match in premiership football that is the best in the wrld know for been physical that u claimed kanu lacked.so peolple like you should shut up and talk with facts and not argue blindly.kanu is stil very active in soccer and not fouls like you will force him to retire.so if kanu is dropped in the present day eagles just tell the players that can replace him:eneramo, akpala, peter utaka, john utaka,.mind up that kanu gives Amodu option cos he can play as a mildfieder or attacker.i bet its your entire family who has contributed nothin to our fatherland is deadwood and pls you should grow up.small boy
Lawman or what ever your name is. You are a fcuking bastard. Its your family, from generation to generation, that are and will be nonentities. You and who be small boy? I am very sure that I started playing competitive ball before you were even conceived.born. Stupid punk ass bitch.
You idiots of nowadays watch premiership football and think you know everything about football. You know nothing! You are a peon, when it comes to Nigerian football. A complete dunce!
Exactly what has Kanu done in the past 4 years for Nigerian football? As a striker, how many goals has he scored? How many assists has he had? The guy is a benchwarmer for a mediocre team in the EPL for crying out loud and you have the fcuking nerve to say he is relevant to the eagles?
How many of his young 1995 Ajax Amsterdam team mates are still playing International football today? Marc Overmans, Jari Litmanen, Patrick Kluivert, Clarence Seedorf, Michael Reizeger, the De Boar brothers, Edgar Davids…all have since quit international football. Only Van de Saar is still active, because he is a keeper. Shouldn’t that tell you something? Punk ass bitch!
The guy walks around the pitch, has no speed, cannot run or chase after balls and yet you feel he deserves a spot ahead of a more enterprising kid? Do you know who could have been chosen instead of this guy? Don’t you think Obasi would possibly have been on the squad if Kanu wasn’t there? Don’t you think this experience would bolster Obasi’s international profile and experience, especially with the WC around the corner? Don’t you think Obasi would have more to contribute to our ANC and WC campaigns than a hobbling Kanu would?
Sometimes, its shocking how daft some of your kids are these days.
i dont think Mr Amodu has done any good to the hope and aspiration of over 150 million nigerians. How can any right thinking coach drop a player like Chinedu Ogbuke and Adeleye who play regalar football at their respective clubs? Its high time the NFF bigwis do something.
I guess we are all patriotic and fanatics of football. Let me share my opinion. Amodu has selected his squad and there’s nothing anybody can do again. We just have 2 wish them the best. I will like to tell Chocolate Brother that it’s very unfair and mean for him to crucify Kanu, experience cannot be bought at the market, it is attained. I am an arsenal fan and I watched Kanu play a few minutes against me, Kanu might not be the fastest, but his technique, skill, ideas, contributions within the little minutes that he plays are always very awesome. Kanu has never won a nations cup, the people that were excluded still have many years ahead of them. I’ve learnt something not 2 criticize those that have been loyal to Nigeria and have given their best.
In my own opinion, it is very impolite and cruel to condemn Kanu or JJ. I am sure Kanu will contribute his won quota. Lets just pray fro the best
Actually this is not new to us cos dat my expectation, wat i will just like to say is that we should give support to them so God can support us, cos i don’t think we have to Criticize on coach or any player
While its good to comment, its also good to put up a very constructive ones. Kanu does not deserve what fans are hurling at him rather we should tell NFF to tell us what will happen to Amodu should he fail in Angola. For me dropping Ogbuke and Adeleye was like committing football blunder. How I wish the coach can do away with that lethargic Mike Eneramo. I have been trying to be moderate about his call ups and his eventual inclusion. Please Mr.Coach, Eneramo should have been dropped alongside Yobo to make room for more mobile and active players like Oguke and Adeleye. As for the duo of Adeleye and Ogbuke, please your days of glory is near
i wonder why we are using dis quaud.they have failed us so many times.we believe to much in luck dat is why amodu is using the same players.am sori to says angola 2010 is not a game of luck.it is going to be a game of determination
is it true that obasi have droped for matins,if that is true.den expect nothin tangible from matins
A good coach knows that on the field of play the entire team play to compliment one another.
The team attacks from the defenders to the midfielders and then to the strikers. It is also like that while defending. Both the strikers and midfielders help the defenders in defending against offending openents. That was how the 1994 Super Eagles were built by Westerhof; very versatile and complete as a world class team.
The present Super Eagles attack as a team but does not defend as a team. Both strikers and midfielders shy away from defending duties, resulting to too much pressure on the defenders, thereby making them to look as if they are weak. The coaching crew must insist that strikers and midfielders must assist in defending as well. Any one of them not defending well should be replaced. Any striker or midfielders that loses the ball to an openent should be made to go back and retrieve that ball back. The coaching crew should be strict and take the business of the game seriously.
lasong i feel u. Mr. Lawman and Mr. Chocolate brother, maturity or immaturity is seen in the action of an individual when he/she is provoked to the highest level. This is just football,a sport which is the binding factor in our world today. No cause for quarrel and heavy abuses.this is a forum to express urself, learn from others’ opinions and bring ur own facts, and even argue without taking things too personal. This forum is not one in which we Taka and Dabor ourselves. You have your points and others have their points. This forum is where you balance those points, simple. babies, teenagers, adults, old men are all entitled to this forum and age is meaningless as far as this forum is concerned. If ages matter,u would have been asked to fill in your dates of birth and your views will be posted according to ur ages, but dat is not so.abeg make we cool down and come back to the reason we are here. on my opinion, kanu is still relevant,at least, till d end of the world cup. chocolate brother please i agree that kanu is deadwood, but in Super Eagles, highlight or cite examples or situations where kanu’s characteristic of being a deadwood was exhibited. no bias but objectivity. thanks sir. (it is not compulsory that he plays all the matches. he has always been a match winner or a talisman. Please check for my earlier comment, then maybe u go understand wetin i dey yan)
short up Chocolate Brother, your size dey for boot oooh, do you know why expirenced players still sign club in ac milan? even in many clubs they still get contract because they need their present, Kanu is still the best nigeria have 2 times african footballer of the year which okocha could not even get one kanu play biger clubs than okocha too, we need kanu even if we can get okocha there is good mikel and kalu uche need to learn much from him in the midfild even if okocha is not coming as footballer let him be part of the team, if you dont know football close your mout
Sir Ezenwosu Cyprian, u dey make sense
What amodu is telling us is that of all the Nigerians playing in the whole wide world, He couldn’t find an attacking midfielder with flare (a playmaker). It’s quite unfortunate but I believe at the end of the tournament NFF will see reasons to sack Amodu.
Ik,
My question is: what exactly do you need Kanu for? You said he won African player of the year? So? George Opong Weah won World footballer of the Year, along with European Footballer of the Year and African footballer of the Year. That was 199X…over 10 years ago. Is he still playing for Liberia?
Kanu won African footballer of the year OVER 10 years ago. 10 years! Isn’t it time for him to step aside and let younger players play? You want him to start using walking stick before you realize he is too old? Na wah for una!
Felyan,
People still have the image of Kanu scoring those goals against Brazil in the 1996 Olympics. THAT WAS 14 years ago. Any child born in 1996 would have reached puberty by now – thats how long ago that was.
Lets face it: Kanu is irrelevant to our football now and needs to go. He is contributing nothing that someone younger cannot give us, in terms of speed, production and scoring.
When last did Kanu score a goal for the Eagles? I cannot even remember. If another striker had the same scoring record, dem for don pursue am comot for Eagles camp since.
@ IK again,
You talk about AC Milan…wetin dem win with all their experience these past years? Nothing. Football is about winning trophy, nothing else. Since Kanu has been playing, we have only won the Olympic gold medal – 14 years ago.
That tells me he is irrelevant to our team. His so called ‘experience’ has done nothing for us. Even since 2000 when we won silver in ANC, every time we have been on the team, our performance has been declining. That tells me he is completely irrelevant to the progress of the Eagles.
Amodu has a good selection that will be difficult to beat by any other African team. So lets wait and see. 10 days more to go.
Chocolate Brother, I support you totally. I think the old age syndrome has eaten too deep into not only into our politics but also our football. We keep living in the past forgetting that football is a highly technical game. Most matches are won from the technical bench all the players need do is follow the game plan. We need fresh legs and fresh blood for Eagles to really fly.God help our football!!
Sir Chocolate brother,
from ur last sentence which says ‘If another striker had the same scoring record, dem for don pursue am comot for Eagles camp since’, u can agree with me that u only mean Kanu is a unique player and that is why they never pursue am comot for Eagles camp or did he also pay or bribe anyone to be there?Yes he is old and that is my point.Ghana against Brazil in 2006 is a perfect example of balancing ‘special’ old experienced legs with hot youngsters. the Ghanian team was strong, young, and determined, but were still defeated by 3 goals by Brazil who were lacklsture in that world cup. why? Experience! Yes, it is when the old experience factor is used that we can complain cos it will yield nothing productive,e.g. AC MILAN of last to seasons to last season, full of old legs and beaten by Arsenal, full of wonderkids and youngsters, in a champions league match, but they were beaten by a team that has both the experience AC Milan boasted of as at that time, and the fresh upcoming stars that Arsenal boasted and still boast of. Football agewise,Zidane is older than Kanu but he played in the 2006 world cup and was runner up in the world footballer of the year fiesta. i can go on and on. why am i not complaining about Ikpeba that was also once an African best player and is Kanu’s mate. Kanu plays best as a supporting striker. he is generally a forward and has never been an out and out striker like Eto,obafemi, and the likes. so scoring goals is not the koko in assessing kanu. thanks bro
Felyan,
But wasn’t it this same ‘experience’ that cost Ghana the game against the eventual World Champions Italy? Wasn’t it their most experienced player Sammy Osei Kuffour that gifted the Azzuri both goals? So, what happened there?
Experience did not cost Ghana the game against the Selecao. It was their insistence on playing a high defense line which got busted time and time again by the smarter Brazilians.
Kanu was a midfielder for Fanny Amun’s U17 team but was molded by Louis van Gaal as a sub for Dennis Bergkamp (i.e. a support or shadow striker, who plays as an advanced attacking midfielder). In spite of this role, Dennis Bergkamp was a major scorer of goals, for both Holland and his clubs – Ajax, Inter Milan and finally Arsenal. So please, don’t try and downplay Kanu’s role as a shadow striker and his failure to score goals. All strikers are supposed to score goals.
We all need to face the reality that Kanu has failed to deliver for Nigeria over the past decade. He has scored less than 10 goals for Nigeria over the past 7 years – a worse record than Makinwa, Akpoborie and even Chukwudi Nworgu who have since been driven from the Eagles. Its time for him to leave the Eagles, please.
Obasi would have been a more productive choice and would have given us more options as opposed to papa Kanu.
Dele Adeleye will be one of the first names in Super eagles first eleven, but funny enough Amodu did not consider him good enough for a 23-man squad. what a shame! whether we do well or not is not the question. the best legs we’ve got should be on showcase and Adeleye is one of such. Then, can someone tell me what Eneramo is doing in this squad. He is big and that’s all he’s got . no control, no cunning, no speed, I feel ashamed to be a Nigerian anytime I watch this boy (Sorry, man).
And will someone tell Amodu that Mikel is our best midfielder but he is grossly underutilized. How do I mean? be my guest. If Cesc, Dinho, Diego, Lampard play 50matches in a season for their clubs, and their countries ask them to play the exact opposite in a One-off game will it be right to judge their productivity on the strength of that single game. Isn’t it a proverbial saying around here that practice makes perfection. Why should Mikel be made to take up any creative roles in Super Eagles when all he does week-in week-out for Chelsea is to foil the opponents’ attack. Yes, 4-6years back Mikel was the potential playmaker we all dreamed of, the apparent heir to Jayjay’s throne. But welcome to reality Amodu, this is 2010, Mikel’s destiny has been changed, Mourinho took the sting of what remained in this precocious talent attack-wise and strew defensive genes into his make-up. and the boy is not faring badly at all. I’m ashamed to be a Nigerian whenever i watch Super eagles now. it is such a shame. no fluidity, no identifiable playmaker, the midfielders are wobbling. Yet they tell me Amodu is yet to loose. To hell with that. Must Nigeria’s capacity be judged based on the result we get against such minnows (minnows I mean) in Africa like Mozambique when few years back we were so good Italy had to arm-twist to beat us. Every single time we had a true test we failed. it is even so shameful we don’t fail over 90minutes, but in 2-5minutes when a question si asked of us we fall short. Take Tunisia for example. Here weer a bunch that came here to get a draw but every single time they needed to attack and get a goal they did get. First was 2 minutes, teh second 6minutes thereabout. Yet we believe Amodu is good enough. My worst fears is that we may win the Nations Cup based on the sheer strength of teh team and the boys will power. then Amodu will be a tin god and we’ll take him to teh World Cup where we’ll be made mincemeat of. Nigeria. I weep for thsi country…I rest my case.
Sorunmu,
Three gbosas for you! Very well stated.
i think nwankwo the defensive midfeilder for the under 20 team should have been included in this team.that guy is better than sani kaita, seyi and etuhu…adeleye should also have been included …..
nigeria will play well but i think we should not expect a world class performance from the team.
Fellow Nigerias,at this very stage all we need is nothing but prayer to the omnipotent God,to overlook Amodu’s mistake and bring glory to Nigeria again. It’s very unfortunate to have Amodu in charge at this stage.Father dont let Nigeria be put to football shame in 2010.Amen
I am not surprised at this list. Why is Amodu this lazy. He couldn’t even discover a new player for this competition. Must Yobo who makes the worst defensive mistakes be in this team? Something is really wrong with our system. I wish them good luck.
chocolate brother i heard u say u hv played football but its obvious that you achieved nothing as a footballer.people like you is called enemies of progress and i advise you to face ur frustrating life instead of puttin it on kanu.im pretty sure that you and your entire family will not achieve wat kanu has achieved in nigeria football and will always be regarded as a legent whetter good for nothin boys like you agree it or not.so if kanu is droped for obasi then eneramo is sure guaranteed to be in super eagles.i once told you to grow up man cos u reason and talk like a kid.jobless man why not go and find a job and stop replyin every comment made on completesports.i reckon its people like you who go about kidnappin people on our street
Lawman,
You sure are retarded, aren’t you? I made a comment, you replied to it. So, who’s the one replying to every comment made?
And no, I really don’t care to achieve what Kanu has accomplished in football. I played my club football when I was in University (probably before you were even born) and thoroughly enjoyed myself. This was when playing in the Nigerian league was more appealing than playing overseas. Like thousands of football players before me (and after me), I opted to focus on my profession, as opposed to a career in football.
I really feel bad for even responding to your post. You clearly aren’t intelligent enough to debate football and this is a waste of my time, as I would rather debate football with someone who has strong football acumen (which clearly, isn’t you). This is really unfair to you.
my prayer for amodu is to fall in angola bcz amodu is not a good coach.nigeria need good coach and good nfa ojooba and sanilu nfa chairman all of them there thief and ther baster ther wasting nigeria money and will see in angola for shame
just read all ur coment about nigeria football or amodu inclusion of some players or not.firstly i my self hv lost intrest in nigeria aproach of any game they played, cos i ve seen there is no zeen, comitment, determination in d team.watching them is like watching a deadfish in d ocean.i no u ar 2 b patriotic, but dont rely on them 2 much on them.as 4 me i like a team playing good soccer showing determination, even if ar lossing a game.not ur darling superEagle playin like a pregnant women.happynew yr
chocolate brother and lawman, u guys ar both rite about ur discretions.but abussing each others on this issue especially wen a millions of people aroud d world readin this colume is on fair 2 u guys.may GOD B PEACE BTW U.
chocolate brother sorry for the use of abusive words.Happy new year and we all wish nigeria success in AFCON
That nice of you lawman, We should put on the spirit of togetherness and pray to God on behalf of our team which no one has confidence in. HAPPY 2010 NIGERIA!!! may our prayers of wining the cup (ooops!!!) in Angola come tru in Jesus. Amen
Thank you Lawman by showing maturity this time around wich i had expected my elder brother to have done being the older person. Any way, just whant to tell you that both youand chocolate have good points but foul and abusive language should be discouraged in this colum otherwise it will be an embarrassing to us for the foreiner reading these our comment.
To my brother Chocolate , you are a too bit had on Kanu, pls allow Kanu to retire honourably after the world Cup . of present eagles it is only Mikel that can do what Kanu is capable but alsas ! Morino has dealt big blow to Mikel playing stlye and Amodu who could not control a big player of his status too did not help him out of his indicipline…. in all this Mikel is the looser because while Messi who was at same rating with Mikel is now World footballer of the year our own mikel could not even be nominated as African player of the year.
To those who are liking asking for Kanu retirement to that of Okocha …… It is falacy because nobody forced Okocha to quit he choose to quit himself so as to avoid heavy critirisim from nigerians and presmen in view of his glaring failure to qualify for 2006 world as captain wich was largely due to indisciplened Okocha brougth to the Team .. ( Issue of Okocha is definately a topic for another day) And we should ask poeple calling back Okocha what is coming back to Super eagles to do a captain that fails to lead by example who will only plays home matches and will not be in camp for an away matches thereby setting bad precedents to young players on attitude of comming to camp no wonder Obafemi copied his captain too by not showing up in one of the matches the rest now is histrory because Obafemi who has never been to the world cup is definately the losser . I beg let Okocha take his deserved rest . With his midfiled prowes when he was very active we were beating blueblack not to talk of now. After Kanu retiment no body will call him back except novelty matches which Okocha should be good for too.
what is sani kaita and yussuf mohammed doing on that list. i cry 4 our supper eagle bcos dey will fail.it only d fans dat suffers d pain wen dey re not doing well.
Can you please ask the so called Head Coach, Mr. Amodu why he dropped both Adeleye and Rabiu. I thought Adeleye is supposed to be the best Defender in Nigeria at the moment. Rabiu is also more creative and flexible than any of those named Midfielders in Amodu’s list. Mikel’s flexibility and body movement is “0″ Conclusively, Amodu is gambler!!
BRAKING NEWS!!!….STOP YABING AMODU. AMODU 2 IS HUMAN HE HAS AGREED TO CORRECT THE MISTAKE DELE ADELEYE AND ADEBAYO ARE TO BE RECALLED WHILE OBASI IS ALREADY INCLUDED. THREFORE ENOUGH OF THIS ABUSING AND INSULTIVE LANGUAGE TO AMODU……………………….4 MORE INFOR..READ TODAY TRIBUNE NEWS
IT MEANS GOODLUCK FOR NIGERIANS, FOR AMODU CORRECTING HIS MISTAKE BY CALLING DELE ADELEYE, BECOUSE DELE IS ONE GOOD DEFENDER WE CANT AFFORD TO MISS AT THE BACK.
Anytime I think about football I remember when Nigeria used to be the champs in Africa and also ranked among the best in the world. Today we failed to analyze why things have changed for the worst due to the fact that huge amount of money have spent on football with the present bunch of fools in the NFF. Even when it was NFA, things are still manageable.
Since Nigeria conquer the world (football event) in Atlanta 1996, most impressive outings in 1994, we have not improved on these historic achievements till these day. The players at that time, the likes of JJ, Kanu e.t.c are the products of that era. No new blood into the game plan. Our mid-field is a disaster (Basin head Mikey ), the defense so porous like our airport en route to Netherlands and USA (Pencil face Yobo). God help us.
I still have fate in Clem. Westeroff, a fine man who show us the way and all the prestige he make our great country to have in terms of football. Please let allow the man to come and give us another JJs,Kanus,Taribos, Amunikes, Finidis,e.t.c
Since the exit of this man, we have not made any meaningful progress in football. Whether we like it or not our football teams will continue to decay. The man I am talking about is still in our soil, he is not far to assume the head coach. NFF feel that with him in position, no milk will be given to them anymore.
Please NFF help us before will be disgraced one more time. If you care about our football development bring him in to input young blood to the team. The NFF crew members can choose to resign if they wish and let good guys handle the blues for us. They should not spoil our blues with their rock ‘n’ roll music.
It’s quite unfortunate that most Nigerian youths don’t believe in the country. This is made manifest in the type of coments we make about the coaching crew and the selections they made. As for me, the players should have the fighting spirit and there is nothing they can’t achieve. With God the trouphy is coming to Nija. Please brothers, let’s believe in ourselves. Wishing you happy new year and good outing in ACN and W/C.
Amodu is just playing the script of his godfather Sani Lulu, let him know that Nigeria is big than any one person.,cos the day of recorning is already at hand. some people will go to jail, some banished, some will die, will some their properties will be confiscated from them. Let him that has ear hear what is about to happen.
i think we are familiar with this players but with God on our side we can perform better than that of
the nations cup
actually i want to comment from bottom of heart, these list you guys are showing us is not the best, bcos we all know all these players for God sake, we dont new player among them so how do we win these cup? bcos some of these guys have been to world cup we need hungry players whom has not been to world cup .So we pray to God if we can survive Argentina and also first round .lets watch
pls NFA i want you to help us this list can take us to enery where.
THE GOD OF SOCCER THAT WAS WITH NIGERIA WHEN WE WON THE ATLANTA 1996 IS STILL ALIVE, WE ONLY NEED TO PRAY HARD WITHOUT DOUBT BECOS JAM 1:6-8 SAYS……………………………………
Pls NFA try to fix atime of retirement to the players, for someone to continue playing for 14yrs is not very easy,14yrs ago the person could be a giant but now new breed has taken over.do you want a persons that plays 15 mins and less to colapse and not to enjoy his money before taking him out?.pls i am suggesting 10yrs and giveway to youger ones to operate 10yrs also.
Wow ! I must confess It will be an herculean task for Nigeria to cross over to the second round of the competition – to even win a match in the Group Stage. The Final Team presented by the so-called coach is the wost I have ever seen in the history of our football. The pulsating , burning question is : Is Nigerian Football going down the drain ? Where are the soccer giants ?
This I put to all soccer aficionados in Nigeria to ponder !
……Goodluck is based in USA.
My coach, your selection is good based on the time available to you. No team is 100% perfect. What your squad needs is the FIRE burning in them to enable translate your optimism to reality. Keep working more on the engine room of the team which is the mid field.
I belved dat is beta dey chase all dis super eagle an select new boys.
This list is rubblish. why sani, yakubu, yobo and kanu. Why no adeleye , Haruna, Afolabi, Peter utaka, Haruna ibrahim, Adefemi. my own tort there is percial in this squad. We need siasia as our coach
