Nigeria striker Obafemi Martins has confirmed that he has joined Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua from Msjor League Soccer club Seattle Sounders.
The Chinese club reportedly paid Sounders $2 million to the Sounders for Martins.
The news of his move to the new haven of football stars broke days ago, but there was no confirmation from Martins and the two clubs.
But in a heartfelt message to Seattle Sounders, their fans and players on Thursday morning, Martins announced that he will be leaving for China.
“Thank you Seattle,” Martins wrote on a photograph of himself on his Twitter handle. He is in a Sounders shirt waving as if saying goodbye. “Thank you for everything. Thank you for memories that last a lifetime.
“I can wholeheartedly say that I seized the opportunity in Seattle and gave everything I had for the club.
“For me it’s now time for a new challenge. After significant reflection I have decided to join Shanghai Greenland Shenhua of the CSL.
“Seattle will always have a special place in my heart.”
Martins has already pictured in South Korea, where Shenhua are preparing for the new season.
Martins was a big hit in Seattle, scoring 40 goals in 72 appearances for the Sounders.
