Liverpool avenged their Capital One Cup final defeat to Manchester City via penalties on Sunday with a 3-0 spanking of Manuel Pellegrini’s men on Wednesday evening at Anfield.
The performance by the Reds was dominant as they never allowed the loss on Sunday to affect their ambitions. They are now 8th in the table while City are still 4th.
Nigeria’s Kelechi Iheanacho was a second-half substitute in the game.
Adam Lallana scored the Reds’ first goal in the 34th minute. The England international picked up the ball in the midfield and unleashed a low drive to the bottom right corner.
James Milner doubled Liverpool’s lead seven minutes later, when he wriggled himself out of a tight spot and fired the ball beyond the reach of Joe Hart.
Manchester City players claimed James Milner handled the ball with his hand inside the Liverpool box but TV replays showed the ball only hit his chest.
Liverpool created more of the chances early in the second half but the City backline were alive to their duties.
Roberto Firmino finished off a 57th minute counter attacking football after another assist from Adam Lallana.
James Milner almost made it 4-0 but his shot three minutes after Firmino’s goal was tipped over by Joe Hart.
Joe Allen’s dipping lob in the 90th minute could not increase the goals as the ball went on top of the post.
