Needing to avoid defeat in their last Group B clash against Slovakia, England struggled and could only manage to play a 0-0 draw to finish second with five points.
In Toulouse, Wales thrashed Russia 3-0 to top the group with six points from two games.
Aaron Ramsey put Wales ahead in the 11th minute, chipping Igor Akinfeev following a fine pass from Joe Allen.
In the 20th minute, Neil Taylor got on the score sheet, taking advantage of a rebound to make it 2-0 in favour of Wales.
And in the 67th minute, Gareth Bale finished off a through pass from Ramsey for the Real Madrid star’s third goal of the tournament, to put Wales 3-0 up.
Meanwhile, Slovakia still stand a chance of progressing into the round of 16 as one of the four brst third-placed teams.
