With the burden of expectations on Sunday Oliseh to beat Egypt in next month's 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, Completesportsnigeria.com's JOHNNY EDWARD highlights five players who are good enough, based on their current form, to strengthen the Super Eagles squad in for the crucial match.
1. Brown Ideye (Olympiakos Piraeus)
Another player who isn't short of pace and will be of good backup to Odion Ighalo is Brown Ideye. The Olympiakos Piraeus forward who was sensationally dropped from the 2014 World Cup squad in Brazil has not featured for the Super Eagles in over 18 months.
With Martins going the legions of tops stars moving to the Chinese League, the Olympiakos Piraeus striker has gone on to score 11 goals in 21 matches for the Greek Champions in all competitions.
He is powerful, quick, and clinical. The ideal forward in many people's eyes. To add a player of Ideye's quality, the Eagles could steam-roll the Pharaohs of Egypt in over two legs in next month's 2017 African Nations Cup qualifiers.
2. John Ogu (Hapoel Beer Sheva)
The Super Eagles may have the luxury of John Mikel Obi, Ogenyi Onazi, Slyvester Igboun, Rabiu Ibrahim,Paul Onobi, Ifeanyi Matthew, but Sunday Oliseh should not shy away from calling up Hapoel Beer Sheva box to box midfielder, John Ogu for next month's cracker in Kaduna.
Igboun has showed his capabilities as a Number 10, but he and Ibrahim are both very susceptible against quality sides who sit back.
Ogu, who can operate as an anchorman or a box-to-box midfielder, is arguably the most important member of Hapoel Beer Sheva's rejuvenated team in the Isreali Ligat Al. Not to mention scoring two goals in his last six games.
Incredibly athletic and strong, Ogu possesses excellent defensive abilities and "impressive physical strength" and thunderous strikes on both feet. The 27-year-old's attributes and style are ideal for coach Sunday Oliseh's pattern.
Oliseh already has an excellent holding midfielder in Ogenyi Onazi and John Obi Mikel. The inclusion of Ogu will allow this duo to operate in a slightly offensive role, if needed.
3. Victor Moses (West Ham)
The 25-year-old West Ham winger, Victor Moses will be a superb starter for the game against Egypt if he maintains his sparkling form ahead of the game. The Chelsea loanee is capable of playing in a number of attacking positions for the Super Eagles.
Pacy and agile, the former Liverpool and Stoke City forward would best suit Nigeria’s left flank, replacing Moses Simon in the line-up.
The Gent winger though a fantastic player with an admirable skill, will lose out to Moses in terms of techniques endowment and ability to outwit opponents in one-on-one situations.
4. Kenneth Omeruo (Kasimpasa)
Having missed out on the team on account of injury in recent games, Kenneth Omeruo is a proven monster in defense for Kasimpasa this season and, at 22, is a perfect defensive reinforcement for the Super Eagles defence ahead of the game against Egypt.
Omeruo who has 31 international caps for Nigeria, is in his fourth season playing topflight football in Europe on loan away from Chelsea and has wealth of experience to marry his youth and undoubted defensive skills.
With Austin Oboarakpo's form in decline, Omeruo is the perfect man to step in. He has been dominant in the air and represents a threat on all set pieces. He also has fantastic positioning, great timing and an eye for heroic tackles: the perfect John Terry understudy.
There is no doubt with addition of Omeruo to Leon Balogun and Godfrey Oboabona and a fit again Elderson Echiejile, The Super Eagles would have a defensive unit African teams would envy.
5. Isaac Success (Granada)
Isaac Success is one player the Super Eagles will bank on for the future, although that time could be right now for him to be blooded into Sunday Oliseh's new look squad.
Oliseh needs to speed up the process, building a squad not only for 2017 in mind, but beyond, that's if he's not sacked. Success is among the players who will form the Super Eagles's long-term future, and with a group that Nigeria are rightly expected to breeze through, it's the ideal opportunity to give more able youngsters international experience and I don't think the game against Egypt will be bigger for the 19 year old who has scored four goals in 22 La Liga games for Granada this season.
Those games included defeats to Real Madrid and Barcelona where he was Success is familiar with the national team set-up, too, having been part of the Golden Eaglets and Flying Eagles squad in the last three years. Now all he needs is the chance to make his mark in attack, where Nigeria look covered.
