Akwa Ibom State is resolved to use the youth sports festival to revive the now defunct Schools sports and the competition is now to be organized bi-annually to help sharpen the mental alertness of schools’ pupils and students.
This was made known by the state’s Commissioner for Youth & Sports, Monday Uko, while announcing the commencement of the maiden edition of the competition organized by the State Government through the State Ministry of Youth & Sports in partnership with the Ministry of Education and which kicked off on Tuesday, February 14 with the Local Government Elimination Series.
According to a statement signed by his Special Assistant, Media and Communications, Mr. Edidiong Stephen, the Commissioner revealed that the Games are organized in primary and secondary schools categories. The primary school category comprises thirteen sports while the secondary school category will be in fifteen sports.
Some of the sports to be competed include football, basketball, volleyball, handball, wrestling and athletics. Others are judo, karate, swimming, badminton, tennis, squash, taekwondo, scrabble and chess.
Champions from each Local Government Area will qualify to participate in the State Finals of the Games which have been scheduled to take place in Uyo from March 15 to March 19.
