Ten-man Akwa United beat league champions Enyimba 4-3 on penalties to win the 2016 Charity Shield traditional season opener at the Abuja National Stadium on Wednesday, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
The game ended in a barren draw in regulation time.
Enyimba, who lost to Uganda outfit Vipers Sports Club 1-0 in the CAF Champions League on Friday, came close to scoring twice in the opening 20 minutes of the encounter, but Peter Onyekachi missed the two opportunities.
Akwa United were reduced to 10 men 25 minutes from time when Yusuf Adio was sent off by the centre referee.
U-23 Eagles forward Kufre Ebong also hit the crossbar in the closing stages of the game for Akwa United.
In the end, it was the Maurice Cooreman-led side that prevailed on penalties clinching another trophy after recently lifting the the Super 4 title.
