Algeria captain Carl Medjani has refused to rule out his team’s chances of qualifying for the Russia 2018 World Cup even after Saturday’s defeat to Nigeria in Uyo left the Fennecs five points adrift of the Super Eagles.
Victor Moses scored twice and captain Mikel Obi added another goal as the Eagles won 3-1 to take control of African qualifying Group B.
“We’re disappointed to lose but we’re not giving up just yet,” Medjani told reporters.
“We still have a chance of qualifying and we will stay positive.”
The Leganes defender, 31, dismissed suggestions that Algeria’s struggles might be a result of them underrating their group opponents.
“Of course we knew from the beginning that it was a tough group,” former Liverpool youngster Medjani added. “We have big teams like Nigeria and Cameroon who always seem to qualify for the Wolrd Cup, and Zambia can’t be dismissed too.
“It’s not a good situation for us because we got only one point from our first two games, but we still have enough games left to catch up.
“We play Zambia next and we can start recovering with that game.”
