Algeria Captain: We Can Still Catch Super Eagles

Algeria Captain: We Can Still Catch Super Eagles

By Nurudeen Obalola:

Algeria captain Carl Medjani has refused to rule out his team’s chances of qualifying for the Russia 2018 World Cup even after Saturday’s defeat to Nigeria in Uyo left the Fennecs five points adrift of the Super Eagles.
Victor Moses scored twice and captain Mikel Obi added another goal as the Eagles won 3-1 to take control of African qualifying Group B.
“We’re disappointed to lose but we’re not giving up just yet,” Medjani told reporters.
“We still have a chance of qualifying and we will stay positive.”
The Leganes defender, 31, dismissed suggestions that Algeria’s struggles might be a result of them underrating their group opponents.

“Of course we knew from the beginning that it was a tough group,” former Liverpool youngster Medjani added. “We have big teams like Nigeria and Cameroon who always seem to qualify for the Wolrd Cup, and Zambia can’t be dismissed too.
“It’s not a good situation for us because we got only one point from our first two games, but we still have enough games left to catch up.
“We play Zambia next and we can start recovering with that game.”

  • Will Algeria ever learn? He is talking of catching Nigeria when Cameroon and Zambia are ahead of them. He hope to make up with Zambia. Will someone please tell this young man and the country Algeria that if we judge with what happened yesterday, Nigeria will go to Algeria and win. Unless it is new set of players we have not played before. If it is the same Mahrez, Slimani and co, Nigeria will beat them or at worse draw. Nigeria will take the renaing 3 points vs Algeria or share it with them. If we want to do some logical calculation here we can. If Zambia away draw with Cameroon that draw with Algeria who were at home, it means that Zambia can beat Algeria at home and draw away at Algeria. If Cameroon draw withAlgeriaaway, it is logical to say they will beat Algeria in Cameroon. Nigeria beat Zambia away and this Zambia drew with Cameroon who drew with Algeria away, means that Nigeria will beat Algeria in Algeria. Logic. Algeria is in big big trouble.

Football isn’t a logic puzzle like math. It’s about form, because it’s human beings playing a sport. A+B does not always equal C or else Germany would never lose a match. I’m pleased with Nigeria’s performance but I hope that they do not fall into such a flawed line of thinking when they next face Algeria.
