One of Africa’s representatives at the ongoing Rio 2016 Olympic football event, Algeria, crashed out of the tournament after losing 2-1 to Argentina at the Joao Havelange stadium on Sunday.
Second half goals from Angel Correa and Jonathan Calleri handed Argentian a lifeline in the tournament following their opening day defeat to Portugal and ended the Les Verts’ dreams of a quarter-final berth in the competition.
Correa, arguably Argentina’s best player on the day, had two chances to hand his side the lead but saw is shots from just outside the penalty area inches wide of the post.
He however made up for his misses when he reacted the quickest to Calleri’s knock down and calmly slotted home past Chaal with his left foot to give his country the 1-0 lead.
Sofiane Bendebka restored parity for Algeria but Argentina would retake the lead 2-1 in the 70th minute.
Again Correa and Calleri linked up for a nice interchange at the edge of the penalty area which resulted in Calleri netting the winner.
After Sunday’s Group D games, Portugal still lead the group with six points with a superior goal difference while Honduras and Argentina are both tied in third place with three points.
Next up for Argentina is a final group game against Honduras on Wednesday, while Algeria square off against Portugal in Belo Horizonte at the same time.Uncover how I make $750 weekly on Facebook using never been revealed Social Media tools.
