–Moreno Loses decathlon lead, Egbeniyi finishes 8th in 800m
By Sab Osuji In Brazzaville:
Doreen Amata’s reign as All Africa Games queen ended Monday in Brazaville following her inability to soar over 1.91m and Seychelles’ Lissa Labiche.
Also ended was her bid to become the first woman in Games’ history to win three consecutive gold medals in the event.
The twice IAAF World championships finalist soared over 1.75m,1.80m and 1.85m on first attempt but failed to clear 1.81m on first attempt. That gave the lead jointly held by her and Labiche to the Seychelles history-maker who cleared 1.88m on first attempt.
Amata raised the bar to 1.91m but failed to clear thrice while Labiche cleared on her second attempt to re-confirm her position as the new All Africa Games queen of the vertical jump and Seychelles first gold medalist in track and field in the history of the Games.
Meanwhile, multi eventer,Peter Moreno of Nigeria failed to hold onto his opening day marginal lead of the decathlon event as he crumbled like a pack of cards on day two of the event.
Moreno sat on top of the standings after five events on the opening day but gave up the advantage in the following five events to end up as the seventh best in the competition, amassing a mind-boggling 6,281 points,a few hundreds lower than the 6,669 points British woman,Jessica Ennis-Hill got to win the world championships title in Beijing last month.
Mauritius’ Thierry Guillaume got 7,591 points to win the gold followed by Ghana’s Nyamadi Atsu (7,478 points) and South Africa’s Pretorious Frederich (7,186 points) to win the silver and the bronze respectively.
In the women’s 800m,Abike Egbeniyi’s impressive run in an event the East Africans have made their exclusive preserve ended in the final, running 2:09.36 to place eight.
South Africa’s Caster Semenya won the gold (2:00.97) with Kenya’s Annet Mwanzi (2:01.54) and Ethiopia’s Chaltu Shume (2:01.59) winning the silver and bronze medals respectively.Uncover how I make $750 weekly on Facebook using never been revealed Social Media tools.
