Arsenal Boy Iwobi Storms U-23 Eagles Camp

–Reveals Wenger didn’t want him to play for Nigeria

Nigeria seems to have won the tug of war with England over Arsenal starlet Alex Iwobi as the 18-year old stormed the U-23 Eagles camp Wednesday with a revelation that Gunners Manager, Arsene Wenger wanted him to play for England instead of his country of birth, Nigeria.

Iwobi who arrived the Dream Team VI camp in the morning in company of his father, Chuka, went further to disclose that former Nigeria captain, Austine Jay Jay Okocha and his father played key roles in urging him to play for Nigeria instead of England.

“I decided to come and play for Nigeria because I love the green and white colours of Nigeria”, starts the 18-year-old.

“Actually, manager Arsene Wenger wanted me to play for England but my father and (Austine) Jay Jay Okocha urged me to play for Nigeria, my country.

“They advised it would be good for my career to play for Nigeria instead of England and I believed them because Okocha had played for Nigeria before and made a very good career out of it.

“So I decided to come down and see a little bit of what I can and I must say it’s being a nice experience. I’m happy to be home.”

After arriving Nigeria Wednesday morning, the Onitsha born nephew of Okocha took part in the evening’s training and shares his feelings of his new teammates with Complete Sports.

“They are all good players, I saw good players all over. For me I need to train with them for about two or three times to really understand them and the team better.”

Iwobi, who captain’s Arsenal’s Under 21 side, is highly rated at the Emirates Stadium and has already signed professional terms.

The teenager, who was born in Lagos, has represented England at Under 16, Under 17 and Under 18 level.

He is close to making his first-team breakthrough at the Emirates Stadium. He featured on the bench for Arsenal’s Champions League clash against Galatasaray in December.

The youngster, who can play on either wing, scored eight times in 35 appearances for Arsenal’s various youth sides last season.
