Nigeria track and field international Peter Emelieze is on the verge of completing a switch of allegiance from Nigeria to Germany following the confirmation of his German citizenship in January.
Emelieze who represented Nigeria at the IAAF outdoor world championships in Daegu in 2011 has been living in Cologne since 2008 and ran as a German athlete at the Jablonec Indoor Gala in Jablonec, Czech Republic last Saturday.
Curiously he also participated in the German indoor championships in Leipzig last month.
Complete Sports could not immediately get confirmation of the move by the athlete who last represented Nigeria at the London 2012 Olympics where he failed to advance beyond the first round.
He began his Nigerian adventure in 2004 when he dorned the country’s green and white colours to the 10th IAAF World Junior Championships in Grosseto, Italy.
He has raced twice for Nigeria at the IAAF World Indoor Championships (2010 in Doha and 2012 in Istanbul, Turkey) making the 60m semi-finals on both occassions.
Emelieze’s intending switch should be a mere formality as he has fulfilled the mandatory three years of not representing Nigeria following the date of acquisition of new citizenship pursuant to the athlete’s application.
He should be available to represent Germany this summer at the Rio Olympics.
