Awoniyi: Beating Congo Crucial Now, Not AAG

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

The football event of the 2015 All African Games will be tough going by the pedigree of teams Nigeria will confront in Congo Brazavill, but Taiwo Awoniyi tells Completesportsnigeria.com he is rather looking to help Nigeria overcome Congo first in the 2016 Rio Olympics qualifier on July 19 at the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt.

The Confederation of African Football on Thursday conducted draws for the men and women football events of the Games which will hold September 3-18.

Nigeria were pooled along with Ghana, Senegal and Egypt in Group B.

Awoniyi however  tells Completesportsnigeria.com categorically, that he is in the U23 camp with focus on the Olympics qualifier against Claude Leroy's team.

"Our AAG group will be tough because those are strong teams. We have football rivalries with them," begins the U23 Eagles striker.

"But I'm in camp at the moment for the Olympics qualifier against Congo. There's time to worry about the teams for All African Games. We are focused on the Olympics qualifier for now."

Congo, Sudan, Zimbabwe and Burkina Faso are in Group A.

Samson Siasia's Dream Team XI will battle Congo in the first leg of both teams' Olympics qualifying fixtures.

The return leg will be held in Brazaville on August 2.

The winner of both ties will qualify for the CAF U23 Championship in Senegal. The tournament in December will produce Africa's representatives for the Olympics Games in Rio De Janiero.
