–Flying Eagles forward not bothered with Golden Boot
Taiwo Awoniyi is not desperate to finish as top goal-scorer at the forthcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand, but admits it will ‘feel great’ to get the golden boot in such a big tournament.
The Imperial Academy product says in as much as it would be a great honour to win the golden shoe, he isn’t desperate for any individual awards.
“The truth is I’m not desperate to finish as top scorer at the World Cup but if it happens, then fine,” he says.
“The aim for me is to win the competition because it is a team sport and no one individual can be greater than the team, so I’m not desperate for any individual awards.”
When reminded that being the top marksman in such a competition will boost his CV and increase the number of clubs after him, he remains adamant and insists the team comes first.
“It’s not like I don’t want to score goals. I am a striker and my job is to score goals but I the team must come first before me. I would prefer us to win the tournament and if in the process I end up as the highest goal scorer, it will be a great honour,” he said excitingly.
