By James Agberebi:
Nigeria U-23s striker Taiwo Awoniyi has promised an improved performance when they face Egypt on Wednesday in their second group game at the CAF U-23 Cup of Nations in Senegal.
The coach Samson Siasia-led side narrowly edged Mali 3-2 in Sunday's game.
Goals from Junior Ajayi (brace) and Usman Mohammed, gave the Nigerian side a 3-0 first half lead. But in the second half, the Malians came back strong and scored two goals.
Reacting to the win, Awoniyi told Completesportsnigeria.com in a chat that he is delighted that the team was able to hold on to the lead despite Mali's second half onslaught.
"That's football for you (the narrow win against Mali), but we thank God that we were able to hold on to our lead and secure the three points.
"By God's grace, there will be an improved performance on Wednesday against Egypt."
The Eagles will qualify for the semi-final if they beat Egypt on Wednesday.
