Babangida: CHAN 2016 Will Be Tough, But Eagles’ll Fight

The ,special assistant to Eagles chief coach, Tijani Babangida, expects a very competitive 2016 African Nations Championship for Nigeria.

The cream of Africa's best players in their domestic leagues are in Rwanda for the 4th edition of the Championship, and Babangida spoke to on the chances of Nigeria going one better than their third-place finish two years ago in South Africa.

"Before 2014 when we won bronze, we could not even qualify for the competition, but I believe we will be involved in it always as from now on," Babangida began, " the former Super Eagles winger told

"I expect stiff opposition from our opponents this year. The boys are keen to fight irrespective of the team we play against even though we know it will be a tough competition."

Babangida played as a winger for the Super Eagles and was part of the Eagles side that were runners-up in 2000 with Bonfrere Jo in charge as Nigeria co-hosted the African Cup of Nations with Ghana.

The former Ajax star also spoke of his expectations from the team's speedsters.

"I speak with them regularly. I've seen tremendous improvements in the performance of the boys.

"Ezekiel Bassey, Osas Okoro and Prince Aggrey have what it takes to trouble any defence and I believe they will score goals alongside the strikers.

"As Super Eagles players during our days; Sunny (Oliseh), Alloy Agu and I were used to wing play, so we have quality wingers in the team," Babangida assured. 

"By the grace of God, we will start the year with a win against Niger on Monday," he concluded.

The Super Eagles arrived Kigali, the capital of Rwanda on Friday ahead of their 2016 CHAN commitments.
