Benfica secured a slim 1-0 win against Russian side Zenit St Petersburg in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie on Tuesday.
Jonas late in the game headed home Nicolas Gaitan’s freekick to hand his side victory in the game.
Both sides cancelled each other in the first half with the hosts dominating the game.
They however struggled to create clear-cut opportunities as Zenit held firm at the back.
The second half started in the pattern like the first stanza with Zenit handled by former Chelsea coach, Andre Villas Boas, closing their opponents down in every part of the pitch.
The visitors were reduced to 10 men late in the game when left-back Cricito was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Jonas however handed the home side a slim advantage when he scored the winner in the 91st minute.
