Benteke Strikes As Liverpool Edge Sunderland

Liverpool defeated Sunderland 1-0 at the Stadium of Light Wednesday night in the last Barclays English Premier League game of 2015.

Christian Benteke broke the deadlock in the 46th minute after a goalless first half when he pounced on a pass from Adam Lallana and dispatched the ball through the legs of Vito Mannone who had a good first half performance.

Both teams had a couple of decent chances in the first half, the duo of Roberto Firmino and Nathaniel Clyne for Liverpool, and Jermain Defoe for Sunderland coming closest to scoring.

Jordon Ibe was introduced in the second half and he struck a shot wide but more worryingly was injury concerns for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp towards the end of the game as Mamadou Sakho was the victim of a nasty challenge by Jeremy Lens, luckily he continued.

Christian Benteke collected a great pass inside the box and missed a golden opportunity in the 90th minute as his low drive is headed for the bottom right corner, but Mannone pulled off a marvellous diving save and denied him.

It ended 1-0 and Sunderland remained 19th in the table with just 12 points.
