Shorunmu Defends Vincent Enyeama

Eagles Assistant Coach Says Any Player Can Make Same Mistake

Super Eagles goalkeepers’ trainer, Ike Shorunmu, says it was destined for the team to end Saturday’s match in a 1-1 draw against Malawi, saying France-based Vincent Enyeama should not be blamed for the result.

The Lille goalkeeper’s error denied Nigeria the opportunity of picking the maximum points from the match against Malawi on Saturday, but Shorunmu said any other keeper could have made the same mistake, describing the away game as a tough one for the team.

“We had a tough game in Blantyre, but we are happy that we still came back with a point. The entire team made a mistake and we ended the match in a 1-1 draw. We should not be looking for whom to blame; the mistake has been made and we just have to carry on. The players must have learnt from it and I am sure that such will not happen in future,” the former Super Eagles goalkeeper told Complete Sports.

“Our plan was to go there and pick the three points at stake, but it was not easy and we should not say because we were not able to win, one player should be blamed for that. We are like one family and we are going to work together as a unit to avoid such mistake in the future."

Shorunmu however assured that there will be improvement in the team when they play Rwanda in the return leg of the 2013 African Cup of Nations qualifier in Calabar on Saturday.

Nigeria currently leads Group F of the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with four points, having defeated Namibia 1-0 in their first outing in the qualifying series.
