Kanu Prays For Easy' AFCON Draw
Posted: Oct 23, 2012
Former Super Eagles captain, Nwankwo Kanu, has prayed for easy opponents for the team as the draw for the 2013 African Cup of Nations holds in Durban, South Africa tomorrow.
The ex-African Footballer of Year told Complete Sports in Lagos that Nigeria stands a great chance of going far in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations if luck smiles on Keshis's team in Wednesday's draw.
Kanu believes the Eagles could win the trophy if they avoid the likes of Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Morocco and Tunisia in the group stage.
“All we need is adequate preparation because African football is different from what you see in Europe," the former Arsenal star said. "We play with everything in us in Africa, and for any team to win, they must have prepared very well.
“We have qualified now and all eyes are on the draw. The only thing I can say is we should pray for the Super Eagles to have an easy draw so that the players will not be burnt in the first round. And if we can avoid the likes of Cote d’Ivoire, Morocco, Tunisia and Ghana in the first round, I am sure that Nigeria will go far in the Nations Cup, and possibly winning the trophy.”
Kanu who was in Calabar when the Super Eagles defeated the Lone Star of Liberia 6-1 to qualify for AFCON, also calls on the Nigeria Football Federation to ensure adequate preparation for the tournament.
“I have been talking to coach Stephen Keshi and I am sure that he is going to do his best to make sure that the team perform well in South Africa," he added.
Teams that will feature at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations are Cote d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Zambia, Ghana, Mali, Tunisia, Angola, Algeria, Morocco and Niger.
Others are Togo, Cape Verde, Congo DR, Ethiopia and Burkina Faso.
Meanwhile, Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi is expected to arrive South Africa today for the draw billed to hold tomorrow in Durban.
