Yobo: We Must Respect Our Afcon Opponents
Posted: Oct 28, 2012
Nigeria captain, Joseph Yobo, is cautious in waving off his nation's opponents in the group stage of the 2013 AFCON in South Africa.
The Super Eagles have been drawn in Group C alongside champions Zambia, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia.
In a radio interview with Brila FM monitored in Lagos, Yobo said that the pool in which the Super Eagles have found themselves in for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations is "not a very bad group."
He also briefly spoke on the group opponents and Nigeria's chances of reaching the last eight of the AFCON.
The Fenerbahce centre-back has also refused to write off the Ethiopians and the Burkinabes as he believes "football can be full of surprises."
"It's a not a very bad group. It is a very good group for us. I will give respect to every nation that is in that group.
You know football can be full of surprises. The Zambians are the defending champions and we expect them to defend their title. Burkina Faso, Ethiopia have not been very good football nations though that doesn't mean it won't be a difficult group.
"But I believe we can go through the group stage because I believe in the team and I believe in the coaching crew.
Now I'm looking forward to the Nations Cup.I think the Zambians will be very difficult because they are defending champions. But we are certain of the fact that the games against Ethiopia and Burkina Faso are not going to be walkovers," said the Nigerian skipper.
Yobo, 32, has also assured that he will return to the Nigerian squad fit for the AFCON, after missing the last qualifying game against Liberia in Calabar on October 13 owing to an injury.
The Nigerians are expected to start their AFCON campaign against West African opponents, Burkina Faso, on January 21 2013.
