By James Agberebi:
The best boxer at the fifth edition of the GOtv Boxing Night billed for December 26 2015, at the National Stadium Lagos, will go home with a cash prize of N1.5 million.
This was revealed by the organizers at the media briefing which was held on Tuesday at Old Skool Restaurant, National Stadium, Lagos.
Aside from the cash prize, the best boxer as usual will also go home with the Mojisola Ogunsanya trophy.
In a chat with Completesportsnigeria.com, the organiser Jenkins Alumona said the reason behind the increase in the cash prize is to make sure the boxers give a very good account of themselves.
"The idea behind the increase in the cash prize is to make sure the boxers put in a stronger effort. Normally we have been giving N1 million but this time around the money has gone up to N1.5 million just for this special edition since it's on Boxing Day and we need to make it as exciting as possible," Alumona told Completesportsnigeria.com.
He also gave kudos to the organization of the GOtv Boxing Night so far.
"I think we have improved. Every fight night has been better than the previous one. And if we are to self assess ourselves, I believe we have done fairly well. "We will not score ourselves a 100 per cent, but at least from 75 per cent," Alumona added.
Meanwhile, eight bouts are billed to take place at the fifth edition of the GOtv Boxing Night.
The bouts include an eight rounds Super Middleweight Challenge between Sunday Ajunwa and Abolaji Rasheed. A 12 rounds National Welterweight title bout will see Stanley Eribo square off against Sunday Olalekan, while 2003 All Africa Games gold medallist and 2004 Olympic Games boxer Sadiq Ahmed and the popular Olaide Fijabi will face off in a 12 round National light welterweight bout.
And in the African Boxing Union title bout, Waidi Usman and Kenya's Michael Nyawade will do battle in a 12 round contest.
As part of arrangements put in place to thrill boxing fans, Nigeria music star Daddy Showkey will be on hand to entertain. Also 50 lucky fans will go home with 50 decoders.
