Mamelodi Sundowns continued their impressive run in the CAF Champions League with a 2-1 win over Egyptian giants Zamalek in their second Group B clash at Petrosport Stadium in Cairo on Sunday night.
South African champions Sundowns defeated Enyimba 2-1 in their first Group B match in Pretoria weeks ago.
The South Africans had also beaten Algeria’s Entente Setif away from home, but that result was cancelled after CAF disqualified Setif for crowd violence.
Sundowns took the lead on Sunday in the 18th minute when Khama Billiat’s shot bounced off the post, and Tiyani Mabunda was on hand to smartly finish for his first official Champions League goal.
The goal spurred Zamalek on as they raised their game, and following a period of sustained pressure, levelled matters eight minutes before the break following an error at the back: a looping ball was not dealt with as Denis Onyango and Thabo Nthethe both went for it, but Mohamed Ibrahim was quickest as he sneaked in between the duo, lofting the ball home into an empty net to draw level.
Billiat shot Sundowns ahead again in the 67th minute after collecting a fine pass from Keagan Dolly before expertly finishing with his left foot in the bottom corner.
The win took Sundowns to the top of their now three-team group with six points from two matches.
Zamalek, who defeated Enyimba in Port Harcourt, are second with three points, while the Nigerians are pointless from one match.
