West Ham United defeated Liverpool 2-0 at the Boleyn Ground on Saturday with goals from Miguel Antonio and Andy Carrol enough for the Hammers to start the new year on a winning note.
Antonio headed home in the 10th minute from a cross after dispossessing Antonio Moreno of the ball before running almost 100metres to score for his side.
The lead was doubled in the second half when former Liverpool star Carroll jumped high to head home a cross from Mark Noble in the 55th minute.
Liverpool started the brighter side in the second half but West Ham were the better side in the first period.
The win temporarily lifts West Ham United to the fifth spot in the table with 32 points while Liverpool ended the game in eighth place with 30 points.
