Nigerian champions Enyimba started their campaign in the CAF Champions League on a losing note, going down to a 1-0 defeat against debutantes Vipers Sports Club of Uganda on Friday at the Nakivubo Stadium, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
New oach of Enyimba, Paul Aigbogun, started new signing Theophilus Afelokhai in goal ahead of Moses Ocheje, with the likes of Dare Ojo, Olufemi Oladapo, Joseph Osadiaye and Christain Pyagbara also starting their first official game for the club.
The Peoples Elephant came close to breaking the deadlock in the 29th minute, but Andrew Abalogu failed to convert the chance after he was put through on goal by Pyagbara.
Buoyed by the support from their fans, Vipers upped the ante in the second half and got the curtain raiser through Erisa Sekisambu 17 minutes from time.
Erisa broke free on the left, and then made his way into the box, before firing past goalkeeper Afelokhai on his near post.
The visitors fought hard to get an equalising goal, but Vipers stood firm to record a famous win against the two-time African champions.
Enyimba will look to overturn the deficit when both teams clash in the return fixture in a forthnight in Port Harcourt.
