Chile 2015: Eguavoen Backs Eaglets To Retain Title

By James Agberebi:

Former Nigeria international and Finland 2003 Golden Eaglets coach, Austin Eguavoen, has expressed confidence that the current squad can defend the FIFA U-17 World Cup title in Chile.

In a chat with completesportsnigeria.com, Eguavoen hailed former Super Eagles team-mate Emmanuel Amuneke for his work so far.

"I believe Emmanuel Amuneke has not been doing badly. He may have not won the African U-17 Cup of Nations, but he must have learnt a lot from there. I believe they have what it takes to retain the trophy but if they don't, we shouldn't see it as a big deal," Eguavoen told completesportsnigeria.com.

He stated the players and the technical crew should not be put under pressure to deliver.

"Expectations are still high because we have set a standard for the U-17. We are world champions but normally, the U-17 is developmental but most of us here don't realize that.

"Maybe we do but we expect too much from the team and the technical crew. Because we are world champions, that tends to put the players and the technical crew under pressure because they too will want to achieve the same feat. I will say they should take the pressure off them," he said.

The Eaglets will open their World Cup campaign against the United States of America on Saturday.
