Durban To Host 2022 Commonwealth Games

Durban To Host 2022 Commonwealth Games

South African city, Durban, has been awarded the hosting right of the 2022 Commonwealth Games, thus becomes the first African city to achieve such a feat.

According to espn, the decision to award Durban the right to host the multisport event, was unanimously taken in Auckland, New Zealand, in the general assembly of the 71 nations and territories of the Commonwealth Games Federation.

Durban was the only candidate left when Edmonton, Canada, withdrew its bid in February, citing costs.

And according to Principals of the Durban bid committee, existing infrastructure will be used to minimize costs.

The bid committee also stated that an athletics track will be installed at the existing Moses Mabhida Stadium, and that venues are already in place to host cycling, swimming and indoor events with An athlete’s village to be constructed.

The games are scheduled to open July 18, 2022 — marking the birthday of late Nelson Mandela, who died in 2013.

Abuja bided along with Glasgow for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, with the Scottish City getting the nod.
