Golden Eaglets coach Emmanuel Amuneke has praised the Super Eagles for starting their AFCON 2017 qualifiers on a winning note.
The Eagles defeated Chad 2-0 inside the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna. Goals from Warri Wolves' Gbolahan Salami and Watford's Odion Ighalo in the 63rd and 78th minutes respectively, sealed the win for the Eagles.
Reacting to the win, Amuneke told completesportsnigeria.com that the introduction of the duo of Rabiu Ibrahim and Ighalo changed the complexion of the game.
"It was a good game; they played better in the second half. The introduction of Rabiu and Ighalo brought in more effectiveness in the team. It was a good game, at least it's always good to begin with a win after a long time," the 1994 AFCON hero told completesportsnigeria.com.
"We have to encourage the players, nobody should expect things to just work smoothly, it's a gradual process."
Amuneke stated that the Eagles struggled in the first half because some of the players were making their debut for the Eagles.
He also advised the team to remain focused ahead of their next game against Tanzania.
He said: "I think they struggled in the first half because most of the boys are new players. Also, you don't expect the Chad team to come and be walked over, they came up with a plan and it worked out for them in the first half but in the second half I think Keshi studied the game and gave more instructions. And like I said, the introduction of Rabiu and Ighalo made it more effective."Jiji.ng the cheapest online shopping in Nigeria
