Manchester United bounced back from their 4-0 drubbing against Chelsea at the weekend with a 1-0 win against Manchester City in the English Football League Cup at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
Nigeria youngster Kelechi Iheanacho was in action for City and had the game’s first real chance but headed over the bar from close range.
That was his only significant involvement in the game as he struggled to make an impact.
Juan Mata eventually broke the deadlock in the 54th minute, finishing off a pass from Zlatan Ibrahimovic to put United 1-0 up.
Pep Guardiola brought on Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling for Leroy Sane and Nolito but United held on to their lead to progress into the last eight.
The defeat means City have now gone six games without a win.
United join Arsenal, Liverpool, Leeds United, West Ham, Southampton, Hull City, and Newcastle in the quarter-finals.
The quarter-final draw was held immediately after the United, City clash, throwing up some interesting ties.
Manchester United will host West Ham, Liverpool will be home to Leeds United, while Arsenal will welcome Southampton. The last fixture has Newcastle visiting Hull City.
