Enyimba Falter In Glo League Title Charge, 3SC Held At Home

—Wikki Beat Taraba To Revive Title Hopes, Pillars Hold Giwa In Jos

By Adeboye Amosu:

Enyimba suffered a setback in their bid to win a record seventh Glo Premier League title following a 2-1 defeat against Oriental rivals, Heartland, in Owerri on Sunday.
With second placed Warri Wolves reducing the gap between them and the Peoples Elephant to three points following a 3-0 home win against Sunshine Stars on Saturday, Kadiri Ikhana’s charges put up a spirited display but were overpowered by the hosts in the end.
Heartland took the lead in the 40th minute through Fortune Omoniwari, two minutes after Enyimba midfielder Ifeanyi Anaemena was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Omoniwari curled in free kick at the edge of the visitors’ defence and was booked afterwards by the referee for pulling off his shirt in celebration.
Coach Ikhana made two substitutions before the end of the first half with Kingsley Sokari coming in for the ineffective Burkinabe import, Ahmed Kone, and Mfon Udoh coming on Ezekiel Bassey.
The changes yielded positive fruits as Enyimba won a penalty three minutes into added time which was coolly converted by Markson Ojobo for his fifth goal of the season.
They were denied a positive result from the game with Emeka Ogbuh scoring the winner for Heartland in the 61st minute.
In Bauchi, Wikki Tourists moved into the third position after edging out FC Taraba 1-0 in a closely fought encounter.
Victor Yakubu scored the only goal of the encounter in the 27th minute.
Kwara United improved their chances of escaping the drop with a 2-1 win against fellow strugglers, Akwa United.
Sherrif Jimoh put the Harmony Boys ahead in the 38th minute, while Dare Ojo doubled the lead on 56 minutes, his sixth goal of the season for Tunde Sanni’s charges.
Aniekpeno Udoh reduced the deficit three minutes later but the Promise Keepers were unable to find their way back into the game and they returned to Uyo empty handed.
At the Karkanda Stadium, Katsina, El-Kanemi Warriors beat Sharks 2-0, while their Garden City rivals, Dolphins, were held to a 0-0 draw at home by FC IfeanyiUbah.
Shooting Stars also failed to beat Bayelsa United at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan, with the game ending in a barren draw.
Giwa FC failed to make home advantage count as they were held at home by Kano Pillars.
Charles Henlong missed a penalty for the Jos Elephant in the first half.
Esosa Igbinoba converted a penalty kick in the 92th minute, his 15th goal of the campaign, to give Nasarawa United a 1-0 win against Lobi Stars at the Lafia Township Stadium.
