Enyimba defender Bright Esieme has blamed the red card to central defender Ifeanyi Nnaemena for his side’s draw against Dream Team VI at the Super Six tournament in Abuja.
The 2014 Federation Cup winners played to a 1-1 draw against the Olympic side in match day 4 clash at the pre-season annual football showpiece.
Former ABS striker Andrew Abalogu scored Enyimba’s lone goal before the Olympic side rallied to equalise.
Esieme said a draw though was better than a loss to the national under-23 side.
“The referee spoiled the game for us with the unnecessary red card issued to our central defender, Ifeanyi Nnaemena, His departure affected us badly throughout the remainder of the encounter.
“Honestly, we outplayed the Under-23 side in all departments of the game and should have gone home with the maximum points.
“However, a point is better than nothing.
“Even though we came into the tournament under-prepared, we’ve shown remarkable improvement with every passing day of the tournament,” said the Super Eagles strongman to supersport.com.
Esieme is optimistic that his side will defeat Nigerian champions Kano Pillars in the last-day match of the tournament on Sunday.
“We’ll defeat Pillars come Sunday, it won’t be an easy game given the rivalry between the sides but we’ll certainly come out top.
“Three wins, one draw and a loss won’t be a bad performance,” said the former Abia Warriors defender.
Enyimba are using the tournament to prepare for the Caf Champions League date against Benin Republic side Buffles du Borgou FC coming up in the second weekend of February in Aba.
