Liverpool defeated Manchester United 2-0 in the first leg of their Round of 16 clash at Anfield on Thursday night.
Daniel Sturridge and Roberto Firmino were the scorers for the Reds who were generally the more dominant side.
Daniel Sturridge converted a 9th minute penalty after a dangerous play by Memphis Depay who brought down the England international in the box and handed the Reds an early advantage.
Sturridge was later denied in a one-on-one situation by United's David De Gea in the 30th minute.
Phillipe Coutinho fired a powerful shot in the 52nd minute but De Gea tipped the ball over for a corner. Nathaniel Cylne also produced a long range effort 15 minutes later which David De Gea punched out.
Liverpool's attacking play paid off when they doubled their lead with the game grinding to the end.
Adam Lallana fed the ball through to Roberto Firmino in the 73rd minute. The Brazilian picked up the pass inside the box and quickly sent it into the right side of the goal.
The strike makes it a very difficult task for Louis van Gaal and his team to negotiate in the return leg next week.
