Samuel Chukwueze was finally presented with the Bronze Boot which he won at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile last year, when the Golden Eaglets were hosted to a state dinner by President Mohammadu Buhari in Abuja on Thursday, Completesportsnigeria.com can report.
The award was presented on behalf of FIFA by NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, after the football world governing body had last year admitted their error in awarding Golden Eaglets captain Kelechi Nwakali with the bronze boot instead of Chukwueze.
Chukwueze and Nwakali were tied on three goals and three assists but the latter was awarded third highest goal scorer prize despite having more playing time than his teammate.
Speaking exclusively to Complete Sports, an elated Chuwkueze gushed about his delight to finally get his hands on the award while also praising his teammate Nwakali who he had earlier lost the award to.
He said: "I'm very delighted to receive this award. I want to thank God and my teammates who helped me achieve this feat. I'll also like to thank Diamond Academy who has been helping me develop as a player.
"Kelechi also deserved the award because he was our best player and the best player of the tournament, but FIFA decided I should have it. He is my best friend since we met at Diamond Academy Umuahia in 2013, I have an understanding with him on and off the pitch. We do everything together and go almost everywhere together."
At the tournament, Chukwueze scored two goals against Chile and the other one against Australia. His fastest goal of 25 seconds in the tournament made him the scorer of the third fastest goal in the history of the competition, exceeded by speed only by Brazilians Fabinho at Korea 2007 and Ceso at Peru 2005, who took only nine and 14 seconds respectively to find the back of the net.
