Holders Akwa United progressed into the quarter-finals of the Federation Cup following a nervy 8-7 penalty shootout win against Sunshine Stars at the Aper Aku Stadium, Makurdi on Tuesday,reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
Both sides failed to score in regulation time with the Promise Keepers prevailing in the end after Sunshine Stars forward Meschack Chukwubuikem missed his spot kick.
Akwa United dominated proceedings in the first half but were thwarted by some brave goalkeeping by Sunshine Stars goalkeeper David Ariyo.
Sunday Emmanuel wasted Sunshine's best chance of the game 15 minutes from time when he volleyed over from six yards with Bassey Akpan who replaced the injured Kayode Olufemi already beaten.
At the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna Crown FC of Ogbomosho created one of the biggest upsets in the competition by edging out former winners Enugu Rangers 2-1.
The Nigeria National League side took the lead through Peter Micheal on 23 minutes.
Rangers rallied back in the second half with Godwin Aguda scoring the equalising goal in the 65th minute.
