Nigeria’s Under-20 national team, the Flying Eagles, put up a commanding performance to defeat two-time African champions Enyimba 2-0 in a Super-6 match on Saturday.
Flying Eagles captain Musa Muhammed scored from the spot and Musa Yahaya came off the bench to put gloss on the outcome of the game against the People’s Elephant.
Enyimba head coach Kadiri Ikhana put out a defensive looking side with Bala Zakka, Ugwu Uwadiegwu, Chima Uluocha, Chinedu Udoji, Uche John and Ifeanyi Anaemena all starting.
Manu Garba’s under-20s began the match in high octane style against Enyimba and barely allowed the Aba club the chance of possession.
Flying Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi was a constant threat to Enyimba’s backline with his mazy runs.
But Enyimba held off the continued attack of the Flying Eagles to finish the first half goalless.
Awoniyi continued to turn the screws on the Enyimba defence in the second half and slipped through Wasiu Jimoh in the 52nd minute, but the striker skied his effort from inside the box.
At this time, Flying Eagles winger Prince Aggreh had been sent off for a second bookable offence by centre referee Aniete Ferdinand.
On the hour mark, the Flying Eagles won a spot kick after Anaemena fouled Awoniyi in the penalty area.
Muhammed stepped up and converted the penalty sending Chijioke ‘Arugo Monkey’ Ejiogu the wrong way to give the Flying Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Enyimba did not make their numerical advantage count and the Flying Eagles scored a second goal to kill off the game as a contest at the death.
Yahaya scored quite a spectacular goal when he turned inside of Emmanuel Anyanwu a couple of times before squeezing the ball past Ejiogu.
Enyimba will now have to redeem themselves on Match Day 2 on Monday when they play Warri Wolves while the Flying Eagles will look to continue their fine performance against Nigerian champions Kano Pillars.Jiji.ng the cheapest online shopping in Nigeria
