Former Nigeria midfielder, Garba Lawal, has called on Super Eagles defenders and midfielders to be at their very best ahead of today’s 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Zambia.
This is the first time the Super Eagles will be meeting Zambia in a World Cup qualifier.
Previous meetings have been at the Africa Cup of Nations tournament, AFCON qualifiers and international friendly games.
Lawal urged both the defensive and midfield departments to concentrate throughout the game.
“The defence and midfield need to be very strong,” Lawal told Completesportsnigeria.com.
“They need to focus for 90 minutes. There shouldn’t be any room for costly mistakes if they hope to secure a positive result.”
The France 1998 and Korea/Japan 2002 World Cup star who also predict a very difficult game in Ndola, stated that failure to qualify for next year’s AFCON in Gabon should be enough motivation for the players against Zambia.
“Our boys have to be prepared mentally for the game because this is the only qualifiers remaining for us because we are not going to next year’s Cup of Nations,” Lawal added.
“So the important thing now is for us to focus on the World Cup and hopefully we will qualify.
“It is left for the players to think twice before the game because it is not going to be easy.”
