Garba: Why I Dropped Success, Iheanacho

By Johnny Edward:

Flying Eagles coach Manu Garba has revealed that he dropped Granada of Spain forward Isaac Success for Saviour Godwin during Thursday morning’s FIFA U-20 World Cup win over North Korea for tactical reasons.

Godwin repaid the faith entrusted in him by his coach, churning out a stellar performance with a brace to keep the hopes of the Flying Eagles at the World Cup alive after their opening day defeat to Brazil in New Plymouth.

“He’s a lad I know well because he was in our squad when we won the U-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates in 2013,” explained Garba on the FIFA website. “I put him in my starting XI against Korea DPR for tactical reasons.

“He’s quick, holds the ball up well and he can shoot with both feet. His qualities seemed useful for taking on Korea DPR. Saviour responded in the right way, even if he can still do more. But it’s true that his two goals did us a lot of good.”

Godwin scored twice in the opening five minutes of the second half as Nigeria cruised to a 4-0 win over North Korea.
The FC Stars striker who was missing in Nigeria’s AYC squad that triumphed in Senegal made six substitute appearances at the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup in UAE.

Another needless and harmful media report: Revealing tactics to opponent. How has this piece served Nigerians’ expectations? Eagles are on the tight rope now: Same points (3) with Hungary and one goal shy. A draw will not help the Eagles, but a win. And seeing how Hungary played Brazil despite one man less, despite the Eagles’ arsenal, it will ba tough and tension filled match with Hungary in other to clinch the second spot into the nest round. Eagles’ bulk and the media need not reveal our potentialities to the world and the opponents, it is detrimental. Shallow and unbridled excitement leading to publicizing our capabilities like this is rather a disservice. I WILL KEEP MAKING THIS POINT AGAINST THIS KIND OF IRRESPONSIBLE REPORTING. It is more polite to say Manu’s tests of Saviour and Sokari pays off than why he did so and what skills these guys have over the benched players.
