World U17 champions, Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets will host Team Nigeria UK, a British-based side made up of youngsters of Nigerian origin in a friendly game on July 30 2015, Completeportsnigeria.com reports.
The friendly match is billed to hold at the Abuja National Stadium.
Completesportsnigeria.com reports that the friendly is the culmination of months of negotiations between the management team of the ‘Soaring Eaglets’ and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
Team Nigeria UK was founded two years by David Doherty, a Lagos born former professional player who was motivated to embark on the project after seeing young players of Nigerian origin represent other countries like England and Germany, as well as seeing those who fell by the wayside due to lack of guidance and turbulent personal lives.
Completesportsnigeria.com understands that a talent-hunt initiative began in various academies, schools and youth teams in the United Kingdom, looking for players with prodigious talent, and of Nigerian background.
Doherty managed to pull together a large pool of players ready to represent Nigeria, the country of their fathers thus signalling the beginning of Team Nigeria UK.
Since their creation, the team have tested their might against academy clubs of Birmingham City, QPR, Bristol FC, Bury FC, and Millwall FC, a statement signed by the founder of the initiative and made available to Completesportsnigeria.com informed.
The team crowned their transformation by winning the maiden edition of the African Nations Cup UK Tournament (Junior’s Category) in June 2014 and retained the Championship in the recently concluded 2015 competition.
