The American multinational Information Technology Company, Google, popularly known for its highly resourceful search engine used in sourcing various topics on the internet, hosted Nigerian sports journalist recently from different newspapers and blogs to a hangout session on Thursday 30th of June, 2016.
The event was organised to showcase Google's latest technologies, and how it can aid Journalists in gathering information on the internet that are news worthy.
The event took place at Googles's Nigerian office at Muliner Towers in Ikoyi, Lagos. Nigeria.
The facilitator and convener of the event, Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, who is the Communications and PR Manger, West Africa for Google, put the team of Journalists through the hangout session.
The workshop demystified puzzles concerning an effective and productive usage of the Internet, bridging the lack of basic information on the medium (internet) that drives the digital media.
It might interest you to know that not many people know the difference between a browser and the internet, The Google workshop's attendants' doubts were made valid when a YouTube video was played. It showed a group of Google's staff taking to the streets of New York to ask commuters the difference between a browser and internet. To the surprise of the gathering, only two people, out of a pool of about 15 people questioned, answered the question correctly.
The major attraction at the workshop for Journalists was Google's latest product called Google Trends https://www.google.com/trends/;
Google Trends help an Internet user to collate trending topics which people are searching for, as opposed to popular topics. Journalists were also informed that in order to optimally utilise Google Trends as news hounds, they must be able to answer the 5 Ws of the Google Data, namely;
1. Who is it about?
2. What happened?
3. Where did it happen?
4. When did it happen?
5. Why did it happen?
Answering these five questions, according to Google, will help reporters in writing news stories that satisfy the readers' curiosity in actually searching for information which creates trending topics.
Generally, it was a time well spent, as all participants learned new useful tips for productive Internet usage from the Hangout session which are bound to improve their news gathering, with the aid of this new technology developed by Google.
