Guardiola Thumbs Up City’s ‘High Level Display’ Vs Monchengladbach

Pep Guardiola has hailed his players following their 4-0 home win against Monchengladbach on match-day 1 of the UEFA Champions League, describing it as a high level performance.

A hat-trick from Sergio Aguero and a goal from substitute Kelechi Iheanacho, sealed the emphatic win for the Citizens.

In his post-match press conference, an elated Guardiola posited that the game was very important to the team.

"I'm really happy now. We dominated and we were so aggressive with and without the ball. I knew how important this game was," Guardiola said.

"Today was the most important game of the season. We played really, really good- the players played at a high level."

He added: "The fans have to know we play for them. It is our job. We need them in the Champions League to beat the best teams in the world."

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich gaffer stated that City's aim was to constantly qualify for the semi-finals after achieving the feat for the first tome last season.

"Last season was the first time in history City were in the semi-finals – this can happen – but the target is to do it every season."

On Ilkay Gundogan, who made his debut for City against Monchengladbach after recovering from his injury, and the absence of David Silva: "It shows how good Gundogan is. He is so intelligent – he knew exactly when to control the effort. I think he could play 90 minutes."

"For Silva it is not a big problem but enough for him not to play. I don't know if he will be in time to play against Bournemouth."
