CAF President Issa Hayatou has commiserated with the family of the late footballer David Oniya who died of heart attack on Saturday.
Oniya, 30, who played for T-Team in the Malaysian league, collapsed just three minutes after the start of the friendly match between his team and Kelantan, in Kota Bharu.
Taken to the hospital, he was pronounced dead about thirty minutes later. When his death was announced, the friendly was interrupted at the 60th minute.
Hayatou stresses the need for proper medical check-up for players in order to avoid future occurrences.
"To die on a football field while practicing your profession and doing what you are passionate at is something really afflicting," Hayatou told CAF's official website.
"In these painful moments, my thoughts go firstly to the family of the deceased, his loved ones, his teammates and the Nigerian football community.
"This tragic departure on a football field is once more a warning to us and confirms the need for us to support medical research in order to understand and thwart this tendency of sudden death with footballers, some of which play at the high level."
Before playing in Malaysia, Oniya, who has been a professional footballer for about ten years, also played in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.REVERSE ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION Within 3Days And Make Her Happy Again!! Guaranteed!!! All NATURAL! No Side-Effects! Click Here!now.
