Special Report By Solomon Ojeagbase:
Social Media week is a global event that comprises of various companies, how they use Social Media and its impact on their business growth. The main objective of Social Media week is to disseminate worthwhile information for the benefit of the participants. Many cities across the globe play host to this event, some of which include Lagos, New York, London, Paris, California, Amsterdam etc.
I attended last year’s edition of the Social Media Week. it was an eye opener for me as I have not had such experience in that context in Nigeria. The event was well organised, as all the venues used were ostensibly furnished to match the theme of the event. I was in three of the sessions of the Social Media Week, where I got to connect with people from various fields, it was also a kind of catch-up with old friends.
After the event, I wanted to be part of the Social Media Week the following year. I wanted to showcase what I had learnt over the years in my field and also put my organization in the fore front of the Social Media trend, based on my experience on how we have been able to sustain the business in the new economic climate. But most importantly, how we have used Social Media as a tool for keeping in touch with our audience.
MEETING THE PEOPLE THAT MATTER
I attended the Gbamm! App launch where I met Obi Asika, the event organizer, I had a brief word with him about what I do. it wasn’t too hard for him to connect because he was also into sports at some point earlier in his career. I told him I was interested in being a speaker at the next Social Media Week, he was very open to the idea and also gave me some advice; one of which is ‘hard work pays’. He mentioned to me that they had also hustled to get to the top and it was not all rosy at the beginning.
I also met Gbamm! CEO Ayo Alli who later became a close friend and family, we talked about so many issues and drafted proposals for the World Cup which was to hold later that year(2014). He is an amiable down-to-earth man.
PREPARING FOR THE EVENT
I submitted my topic to the panel after consulting with Ayo Alli who put me through its nitty- gritty. He also proof read my introduction. After much waiting, my topic was approved. Now, I needed a co-speaker. Ayo suggested I contact Brila FM to know if they were interested in joining me to co-host my topic. It was a smooth encounter as Akinwunmi Oshun volunteered to be a part of the event.
After much research, we drafted our presentation and submitted it for vetting. The date for the event was 27th of February 2015, the theme for the day was SMW#FOOTBALLDAY. Our event was one of the master classes titled EVOLVING MEDIA: TRADITIONAL PRINT TO WEB, MOBILE & SOCIAL APPS WITH COMPLETE SPORTS & BRILA FM
On a cold Friday morning, I woke up very excited in anticipation of the event. I had previously been in contact with my co-speaker Akin. I asked him if he was adequately prepared for which I got a positive feedback. That just made me feel really great about the outcome of the event, knowing that all was set and the floor was mine for the taking.
I got to the Landmark Event Centre in Oniru Victoria Island, there was a lot going on at the venue; people networking, catching up and having a swell time. I got registered at the event and I was taken to the green room where speakers were supposed to wait till it was time for their event. Akin joined me in the green room where we discussed some issues and our expectations from the event.
At 5:45pm, we were ushered into our master class. And the rest was history. The presentation went smoothly. The participants were receptive to our topic and had a lot of questions to ask after the session. One of the participants said that “Complete Sports has gone far hence deserves a path on the back”. Another participant asked how he could generate revenue from Twitter. I thought this was a brilliant question because it was also in the minds of publishers. I answered his question, citing examples of celebrities like David Beckham and Kim Kardashian.
In all, we have been able to showcase both companies – Brila FM and Complete Communication Limited, publishers of Complete Sports. At the end of the event, we exchanged pleasantries and contact with participants. Akin and I talked about more collaboration in the future as the experience we had was mind-blowing.
It is an encounter I will love to have over and again.
