Technical Director/Head Coach of Premier League side, Ifeanyiubah, Daniel Amokachi has heaped plaudits on his players for their resilience which saw them humble Enugu Rangers 3-2 in a match day 23 clash in Enugu, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Amokachi made a winning debut following two stoppage time goals by Austin Oladapo and Okereke Maduabuchi which saw the Nnewi side coast home to a 3-2 win.
The former Super Eagles assistant coach refused to take credit for the win, but emphasized that his players are the ones to earn the praises for the victory.
“As a coach, that’s not first game I’ve won. Also I’m sure I’m not the first coach to win his debut game,” Amokachi told Completesportsnigeria.com moments after the match in a delighted tone after the game at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.
“For me, the players deserve the credit, they are the major actors, fought hard. As coaches, we can only offer them the guide.
“So I can say big congratulations to them for working so hard to earn all the three points.”
Ifeanyiubah came into the game parking the bus right from the start. It meant containing the hosts and employing the counter-attacking game which worked out perfectly.
Amokachi continued: “We came on a counter play, we know that Rangers have a lot of quality players and are in fine form. They also move the ball around well, so that’s why we set up the team to play on the counter. In the first half, we did well to contain them and utilized our chance.
“Unfortunately, we lost concentration in the early part of the second half, and we conceded two quick goals.
“But the players showed plenty of character and mentality that ended up giving us the three points.”
Defending his choice of defensive role for experienced defender and Beijing 2008 Olympic Games silver medalist, Chibuzor Okonkwo, Amokachi said it was aimed at equipping that area with the needed experience.
“We lack experience in the team, especially in the midfield and that’s where he comes into play.
“Remember I have been following the team from the start of the season and I have always felt that he and some senior players can give us much more.”
