Ighalo, Success Shine As Watford Break 30-Year Man United Jinx

Manchester United suffered their second straight defeat in the English Premier League after losing 3-1 to Watford at Vicarage Road on Sunday.

It was also United’s third straight defeat in all competitions and their first loss to Watford simce 1986.

Etienne Capoue, Juan Camilo Zuniga and captain Troy Deeney scored for Watford while Marcus Rashford got United’s only goal.

The defeat leaves United sixth in the league table on nine points.

Also in action for Watford were Nigerian duo of Odion ighalo and Isaac Success, who came on as a late substitute and contributed to the last goal.

Capoue went close for Watford in the 10th minute but he couldn’t get a touch on Sebastian Proedl’s header across goal.

Three minutes later Ighalo had a golden chance to put Watford ahead but he shot wide in front on an open net after David De Gea spilled Proedl’s long-ball.

Despite the miss, Ighalo gave the United defence problems all afternoon with his skills, power and excellent hold-up play.

Watford continued probing for the first goal and went close again through Troy Deeney on 16 minutes only for De Gea to make a superb save.

In the 21st minute Antonio Valencia drilled a low cross from the right which was comfortably saved by Heurelho Gomes.

A minute later, Zlatan Ibrahimovic missed from close range after Marcus Rashford’s cross took a slight touch off Holebas which fell to the Swede.

United had an opportunity on 30 minutes through Paul Pogba but his 25-yard strike came off the bar.

Watford took the lead in the 34th minute through Capoue who smashed in Daryl Janmaat’s cut back.

United were forced to a change on 38 minutes as Ashley Young replaced Anthony Martial who went off injured.

In the 41st minute Proedl made a timely tackle on Ibrahimovic who almost capitalized on a loose ball by Valon Behrami.

On the stroke of half time, De Gea made a safe off Holebas free-kick.

In the start of the second half Ibrahimovic had a chance in the 47th minute but Ibrahimovic shot wide from the edge.

Five minutes into the second half Watford made their first change with Nordin Amrabat going in for Janmaat.

United made their second change of the game with Juan Mata replacing Valencia.

Rashford drew United level 62 minutes after finishing off from close range after a mix-up in the Watford box.

In the 73rd minute Watford almost took the lead after Roberto Pereyra flicked on Holebas’ free-kick which United defence cleared.

Gomes was called into action on 79 minutes clawing away Ibrahimovic’s header off Marouane Fellaini’s long ball.

Zuniga who replaced Capoue put Watford 2-1 up on 83 minutes after powering home into the far corner off Pereyra’s cut back.

In the 90th minute Success went in for Ighalo.

And in the 93rd minute Deeney put Watford 3-1 up from the penalty spot after Fellani tripped Zuniga inside United’s area.
