Former AS Monaco striker Victor Ikpeba has applauded the 'gritty' Super Eagles of Nigeria for their 3-1 win over the Les Fennecs of Algeria in Saturday's 2018 World Cup qualifier in Uyo reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
The Eagles romped to another win in Group B to maintain their unbeaten run under Gernot Rohr, and Ikpeba opines that the Eagles gave the Algerians a lot to think about in defence than the Fennecs offered at Nigerian backline.
The defeat for Algeria was their first in a competitive game in 19 months but Ikpeba believes that it was more difficult for the Eagles as they ran out of steam mid-way through the second half.
"It's was a great game in the first half. The Eagles gave the Algerians a lot to worry about in their defence and they were lucky it ended 3-1," the former African Footballer of the Year began in a brief chat.
"What we need to do now is to maintain this streak and work on our defence,"
"Our chances are very bright and I believe we will qualify."
A brace from Victor Moses and a brilliant strike from skipper John Obi Mikel sealed a third straight win for the Super Eagles under Gernot Rohr.
Nigeria currently top Group B with six points, four ahead of second placed Indomitable Lions who were forced to a 1-1 draw at home by Zambia in the other group fixture.
Next up for the Super Eagles is a home game against Cameroun next year.
