Nigeria forward Alex Iwobi scored his first goal for Arsenal on his first Premier League start as they defeated Everton 2-0 in the Premier League’s lunchtime kick-off at Goodison Park.
The Super Eagles teenager was officially named the man of the match for his impressive display.
Danny Welbeck opened the scoring for Arsenal in the seventh minute but Everton had the game’s first chance on second minute through Seamus Coleman off a corner but his effort inches off the post.
Welbeck opened the scoring in the seventh minute, benefiting from a Sanchez assist, rounding off Joel Robles before slotting the ball into an empty net.
A minute later, Super Eagles starlet Iwobi had a chance to double Arsenal lead but his tame shot fail to trouble Robles.
In the 16th minute, Gabriel made a timely block following an Aaron Lennon cross.
Mesut Ozil had an opportunity in the 22nd minute off an assist from Iwobi but Phil Jagielka made a block for a corner.
Everton came close through Mohamed Besic in the 23rd minute but his low shot was well saved by Ospina.
Jagielka made a fine clearance off a Monreal cross in the 36th minute.
Iwobi doubled Arsenal’s lead in the 42nd minute, slipping the ball beneath Joel Robles after a long range pass from Bellerin.
Iwobi came close again in the 45th minute after an inter-change of passes with Welbeck but shot wide.
Prior to the start of the second half, John Stones replaced Besic.
Welbeck had a good chance in the 51st minute after a mistake by Stones but he failed to capitalise.
The game was halted for a few minutes after Romelu Lukaku clattered into Ospina who saved a Seamus Coleman cross.
Stones almost halved the deficit in the 69th minute only to see his header off a corner go over the bar.
In the 73rd minute, Ross Barkley went off for Gerard Deulefeu.
Arsenal made a double change in the 75th minute, bringing on Olivier Giroud and Kieran Gibbs for Ozil and Welbeck.
Giroud had the ball in the back of the net on 83 minutes but it was disallowed for a foul on Jagielka.
Arsenal had a breakaway but Iwobi’s pass fail to meet Sanchez.
In the 88th minute a cross by Baines was met by Lukaku’s head but Ospina made a simple save.
Giroud almost grabbed Arsenal’s third but his strike missed the target.
