Torino midfielder Joel Obi has withdrawn from Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations clash in Tanzania despite returning to training with his Italian side last week.
The 24-year-old is one of 18 overseas-based players called up by Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh for the trip to Tanzania, but has not fully recovered from a muscle injury that needed an MRI scan a fortnight ago, a top Nigeria official told Completesportsnigeria.com.
The former Inter Milan player resumed training only on Friday, but has not regained the match fitness for Saturday’s showdown against Tanzania.
“Obi is likely to miss the game because I don’t think he has recovered full from the injury,” the official told completesportsnigeria.com.
Obi has suffered several injury setbacks since he broke into the Inter first team in September 2010.
