Kolo Toure has backed his brother Yaya's claim that the Manchester City star deserved the 2015 Glo-CAF African Player of the Year award, which was given to Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in Abuja on Thursday.
The Liverpool defender however admitted that his brother's reaction was over the top.
Yaya went on a disrespectful rant after finishing second, labelling the awards "pathetic" and "a disgrace to Africa".
"Yaya is a good player but some of the big players like Eric Cantona are very strong-willed. I think that is how he is. He is a winner and, when he doesn't win everything, goes a little bit crazy," Liverpool defender Kolo told The Giardian.
"For me he deserved that award. He was the only African player voted in the top four or five players in the world but he doesn't win African Player of the Year. We also won the Africa Cup of Nations and that is why he was expecting to win.
"I will always be behind my brother but this is the game, sometimes you lose and sometimes you win. Yaya's reaction is because he is a winner. I know deep inside he is a nice guy.
"I saw so many comments but I think the football world pushes him to do things that are not really him. He says some things that he doesn't need to say."
Yaya had made his feelings clear in an interview with French radio station RFI after losing out on the award to Aubameyang.
"I'm very, very disappointed," he said. "It's sad to see Africa react this way, that they don't think African achievements are important.
"I think this is what brings shame to Africa, because to act in that way is indecent. But what can we do about it? Us Africans, we don't show that Africa is important in our eyes. We favour more what's abroad than our own continent. That is pathetic."Jiji.ng the cheapest online shopping in Nigeria
