Late Goal Sees England Past 10-Man Slovakia, Poland Blow Lead

England kicked off their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier with a hard fought 1-0 away win against 10-man Slovakia on Sunfay.

The only goal of the game was scored by Liverpool’s Adam Lallana in the 95th minute, his first ever goal for England.

It was Sam Allardyce’s first game as England manager after taking over from Roy Hodgson.

Former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel was sent off in the 57th minute after receiving his second yellow card.

In another Group F game, Lithuania, playing at home, were forced to a 2-2 by Slovenia.

Fiodor Cernych and Vykintas Slivka put Lithuania two goals up in the first half.

But late in the second half, Rene Krhin and Bostjan Cesar scored to make sure both teams shared the spoils.

In other 2018 World Cup matches on Sunday Denmark pipped Armenia 1-0, 10-man San Marino lost 1-0 at home to Azerbaijan, while Poland threw away a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 away to Kazakhstan.
