Nigeria defender Leon Balogun has told AfricanFootball.com he is discussing a new contract with promotion-seeking SV Darmstadt 1898 as his initial deal will run out at the end of the season.
“It (contract) ends after the season. We are negotiating right now,” he informed AfricanFootball.com Last year, Balogun contract at Fortuna Dusseldorf ran out and he joined Darmstadt after a long injury layoff.
He said it was “the perfect decision” to join the club, who were at the beginning of the season widely tipped to be demoted to the German third division, but they are not in contention for a place in the Bundesliga.
“It turned out as the perfect decision for me. I would not have expected this. I had my time to recover from my injury. The trainers trust me 100%, that’s what I need so I could also give it back,”
said the right fullback, who has scored four goals in the league for his club.
Balogun’s club are now second on the Bundesliga 2 table with 57 points from 33 matches, three points behind leaders FC Ingolstadt 04.
The top two teams win automatic promotion to the German top flight.
He has previously played a total of 23 games for Hannover, Werder Bremen and Fortuna Dusseldorf in the Bundesliga.
Incidentally, Balogun tried out with English club Blackpool before he opted for Darmstadt and he said on hindsight he is happy he did not join the club after they were relegated from the English Championship.
